Norwood is a town in the Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Norwood was David Beal who settled on a farm about Lancaster Road and Ridge Road in 1811. He named his farm Beal's Grove after himself and his brother Samuel Beal, both of whom had also come to America from England. In 1819, John Aiken arrived from Wales with his family and set up a log cabin on what is now Main Street. John Aiken was one of the original residents of Muskingum County. In 1821, Lewis Sibley founded Sibley's Mill on the west side of Norwood Creek just north of present-day South Avenue. Norwood became an incorporated town in 1902 when it merged with nearby Amherst Township. The reason for incorporation has never been determined but likely due to its location near Canton (now Cleveland) and the growing influence of that city throughout Muskingum County during this time period
