Norwood is a small town in Union County, Ohio, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. Norwood was founded by Major John Norwood and his family in 1814. The Norwoods were among the first settlers in what is now Union County. In 1830, they bought a tract of land east of Dayton from the Wyandots. They named their new settlement Norwood after John's father, who had died young in 1802. In 1836, Major Norwood donated land to build a school and church in Norwood. That same year, he also donated $100 to the Methodist Church for its construction near his home on Elm Street. The church was dedicated on December 1, 1836. The townspeople soon built schools and churches as well as homes and businesses around their new community center and main square (now First Congregational Church). The early days of Norwood were difficult; it was both remote from central Ohio and isolated from other settlements by rivers and mountains. But over time, the town grew wealthier through its participation in local mills and fishing villages along the Scioto River (now called Raccoon Creek). By 1840,Norwood had become one of eastern Ohio's leading agricultural towns – exporting crops such as corn and beans to Pennsylvania– while maintaining strong social ties with surrounding communities including Dayton and Athens Junction (later Cuyahoga Falls). In 1850, Major John NorWOOD married Miss Caroline Ewing; they would have six children together: Jobnor(1851-1930), Addie(1853-1924), Edwin(1855-1935), Alice(1857-1925), Anna(1859-1945) – all born within two years of each other during MajorNorwOOD's lifetime! In those early years post-Civil War America saw an unprecedented wave of immigration: more than 2 million people came into the U S between 1861 & 1865! Many of these newcomers brought their skills or trades with them – changing not just agriculture but many aspects of daily life hereabouts! This period also witnessed significant growth for downtown Norwoods business district which rapidly redeveloped following initial investment by entrepreneurs like Reverend James Auld (founder/director emeritus Cleveland Academy for Girls) & Drs Haney & Dolan /Dr Auld’s successor Mrs Lavinia Sweeney! Norwood is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Geauga County and Clinton County. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Norwood was Daniel Boone in 1795. The town was founded by James Giddings in 1815 as a result of his land purchase from the estate of Nicholas Pettymore for $2,500 (). Giddings named his new community after himself, Norwood (from Old English "norwold"), which means "pleasant meadow". In 1824, John Henry Steuart opened a gristmill here that became one of the most important mills in Stark County. In 1830, George Stephenson built a canal through Norwood to supply water to townships west of Cleveland. The first school was built here in 1836. Norwood's economy shifted mainly to agriculture during the 19th century; however, during World War II many businesses closed due to wartime rationing and lack of available capital; however, after 1945 many businesses returned and today Norwood has an active commercial center with several high-tech companies and two hospitals
