The yard constructed more than 2500 warships, submarines, and other vessels between 1922 and 1945. The yard also produced the USS Constitution (the first U.S. battleship), USSMonitor (the first ironclad warship), and USSPython (the first nuclear-powered vessel).
Norwalk is an incorporated town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Stratholme Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norwalk was first settled by English colonists in 1795 and became a city in 1853. In 1925, it merged with Middletown to form the present-day municipality of Norwalk. The townsite of Norwalk was laid out on May 3, 1795 by James Ogden and others under the direction of Major George Washington as part of the contested land dispute between Great Britain and France over what would become Ohio after their war for independence. It lay within the boundaries of what is now Muskingum County. Norwalk's original name may have been derived from a Native American word meaning "place where two creeks meet." The name probably originated with John Norris who bought a league (square mile) of land near modern-day Norwalk in 1798 from Chief Miami signatory to Treaty #2 that ended the French and Indian War. Norris renamed his purchase "Norrisstown" after himself and his wife Sarah Snively Norris (1760-1824). In 1827, Daniel Webster included Norwick on his list of villages he visited while researching plans for Cincinnati's new town Hall Square – one year before its incorporation into Cincinnati as a city. At this time, much area around modern day Norwalk consisted of farmland used by neighboring Middletown for grazing animals; however, some structures dating back to this period still stand: The Orchard House built about 1800 by Amos Deming; Crocker's Mill which operated from about 1800 until 1840; and Pritchett’s Store which operated from about 1830 until 1865 when it burned down due to fire set by young boys playing thereabouts during summertime.) On July 8, 1847, when Ottawa Township was organized within Muskingum County, Norwalk had 1 ville (township) with 597 residents including 100 farmers/cattlemen and 25 mechanics/pioneers; however follows no township organization within Muskingum County until March 10th following creation of Athens Township effective that date - one day prior to then final annexation into Medina County effective that date! On November 14th following village incorporation into Athens Township via resolution passed at meeting attended by all trustees present - citizens voted overwhelmingly not to annex any other adjoining communities! This zoning change likely saved many homes in today's nor walk township if annexation were ever attempted!) Norwich reached its peak population count upon achieving city status on December 15th 1860 with 909 residents - again surpassing Middletown’s 735 residents at that point! However future events led to rapid declines in both populations beginning around 1870 – most notably when Toledo annexed Columbus adjacent to Middletown resulting in a community growth spurt for Norwich reaching 104 persons only 4 years later!! Today remaining portions of nor walk township account for most current population figures: 111 total residences vs 102 resident dwellings located within Middletown proper & 103 person dwellings located east & south beyond limits embraceable bordered misdemeanor street grid represented herein...virtually all public infrastructure currently exists within or contiguous thereto boundaries making such inclusion difficult or impossible without special request)...the once vibrant nor walk community has effectively fallen victim to decades long lack thereof character thru development restrictions placed upon municipality ordinance limiting property values thereby maintaining large housing tracts unavailable To those seeking mixed use redevelopment opportunities...nor Walk remains primarily rural agricultural landscape characterized largely by rolling hills overlooking open fields lying just outside municipal limits
