The Coast Guard has been a part of the Norwalk community for almost 60 years. The earliest record of the Coast Guard in Norwalk is from 1872 when it was known as the Harbor Patrol. In 1957, the Coast Guard became a part of the Ohio National Guard and remained so until 1995. Today, there are more than 1,200 members of the Coast Guard in Norwalk who serve in various roles including search and rescue, law enforcement, maritime security and more. The Coast Guard also provides support to local businesses by providing chartered vessels, helicopter services and other Means to provide emergency services. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that provides emergency response and protection to the coastline. The Auxiliary has many different programs that help protect our coastlines, including the Coast Guard Gift Shop. The Coast Guard Gift Shop is a store located in New York City that specializes in connecting Islanders with gifts for coastal emergencies such as hurricanes, floods, and storm surges. The shop also sells supplies for the Coast Guard and other related organizations. The Coast Guard Auxiliary operates several gift shops throughout the United States. The most popular of these are located in New York City and Miami Beach. In New York City, the shop typically opens at 10 am on Monday through Friday and closed on Saturday. Mi Beach's shop usually opens at 10am on Monday through Friday but it is open from 9 am to 4 pm during summer months. Gift items can be purchased both online or in-store. Customers can choose between local or international donations which help support the Coast Guard's missions around the world. The Norwalk Coast Guard Station was founded in 1912 as the NORWALK Lighthouse. In 1941, it became the NORWALK Coast Guard Station #2 and then in 1963 the NORWALK Coast Guard Station #3. The station is now part of the Ohio Division of Marine Resources.

Norwalk was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Norwalk and his family from Connecticut as an agricultural outpost on the Scioto River near present-day Portsmouth. The town grew rapidly from its founding until it became an important commercial center in central Ohio during the mid-19th century. Development accelerated following World War II when abundant munitions production resumed in western Ohio following the war's end. By 1970, grain production had become Norwalk's primary source of revenue, and more than half of its total economic output came from these activities through 2000. Norwalk, Ohio is an historic town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded in 1814 by Joshua Henshaw and other pioneers who traveled along the Great Lakes to find land for a new settlement. The town became a major transportation center on the Erie Canal and later became known for its heavy industry, including blast furnaces, paper mills, lumber yards and shipbuilding. In recent years, Norwalk has become a small upscale community located just outside of Toledo. Norwalk's rich history includes numerous landmark buildings, including the Norwalk Arsenal (1814-1827), Norwalk High School (1907-1998), Nathan Hale Elementary School (1912-2004) and Norwalk Library (1896-2002). Many of Norwalk's residents have contributed to its economy through their work as industrialists or entrepreneurs. Some famous local residents include former President James K. Polk, author Herman Melville and basketball coach Rick Majerus.
Norwalk was founded in 1825 by Nicholas Norwalk and his brother, John. The town originally consisted of only a few small settlements, but within a few years it had become an important commercial center due to its location on the Ohio River. In 1829, Norwalk became the capital of the newly formed westcentral Ohio Territory. The town continued to grow during the 1830s and 1840s as businesses located here developed into major institutions such as the Norwalk Banking Company and local newspapers. By 1860, Norwalk had reached its peak as a commercial and cultural center, hosting popular events such asthe American Revolution Centennial Celebration and the National Academy of Sciences’ meeting. However, during the mid-1850s prosperity began to decline in western Ohio due to advancing technology and other forces outside ofnorwich’s control. By 1870, much of norwich had been destroyed by fire orcasualty raids from neighboring towns. Today, portions of norwich remain visible through streets named for key figures from its history including Nicholas Norwalk (now known as Broadway) and John Norwalk (now known as Exchange Street).
