During the late 1800s and early 1900s there were several major roasters who operated out of Norwalk including Harpers Ferry Coffee Company (founded 1895), Peet’s Coffee & Tea (1899), Dutch Bros., Inc.(1911), Brown Brothers & Co.(1914), and Stroud Bros.(1920). These companies produced high-quality beans that helped contribute to the city’s growth during this time period. During prohibition years (1920-1921), Norris Liquor Store operated successfully without any government or law enforcement assistance due largely to its strong relations with local bootlegger Harry Jaffe Sr.. Norris Liquor Store closed its doors during Prohibition but reopened thereafter as one of America's leading liquor stores before closing again during World War II due to war rationing restrictions.
