The United States Army was a professional military force in the Americas until 1898. It was then replaced by the American National Guard during World War II. The U.S. Army deployed Gift History in Norwalk, Ohio from 1881 to 1907 and again from 1947 to 1957. The first deployment of the U.S.Army's present day gift history occurred on November 5, 1881 when General John J. Pershing's 3rd Infantry Brigade arrived in town for a three-day celebration of Thanksgiving Day with troops from New Mexico and Arizona under command of Brigadier General James Wickersham (who also served as Commandant of Cadets at West Point). The brigade's gifts were distributed to local residents and businesses as part of an advertising campaign managed by Colonel Augustus Bancroft (later Major General Clarence Dutton). In 1907, General John J. Pershing ordered all field artillery battalions stationed throughout the Western Hemisphere be organized into brigades under his command so that they could more easily deliver goods and services to troops located in various countries across Latin America during World War I (the "War to End All Wars"). With this order came the need for gift history deployments to numerous areas within those brigades, including Norwalk ( birthplace of George Washington). On July 16, 1947, President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 9265 which called for all branches of the military to deploy Gifting History detachments throughout all fifty states within two weeks for holiday festivities culminating on New Year's Eve/New Year's Day 1947 - thus establishing Gift History as an official branch of army!
