Every year, the Air Force sends gifts to members of the military and their families stationed around the world. The Air Force Deployed Gift History program helps give back to our troops by giving them something they may need or want. This year, we are sending a gift to Norwalk residents in memory of Sgt. John Zarbaugh who was killed in Iraq on November 5th, 2004. Sergeant Zarbaugh was an Army Combat Medic who gave his life fighting for our country. Norwalk is a municipality in the U.S. state of Ohio and seat of Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,837. The city is located on the southern edge of the (now) University Heights neighborhood in the central business district of Cleveland, about 1 mile east of Downtown Cleveland on Euclid Avenue. The first Europeans to settle in Norwalk were Frenchmen from Quebec who arrived in 1797; they founded La Salle Academy and built a small fort on what is now Bridge Street In 1802, German immigrants Count Friedrich Wilhelm von Bismarck and his family arrived from Württemberg, Germany with their children Johann Friedrich August and Elisabeth Wilhelmine; they named their new settlement after themselves, Norwalk (actually "Nordhausen"). The town's boundaries changed several times over time until it was annexed by Cleveland in 1853 as part of an effort to build a railroad between downtown Cleveland andAkron. On July 12th, 1870, during its incorporation process into Cleveland as a municipality – making it one of only two municipalities in Ohio that did so – Norwalk voted to annex Painesville Township which lay just south of its limits. painesville township annexation deed #2 In 1907-1908 Orchard Park developed adjacent to Norwalk along Route 9W as an agricultural area used for growing apples and other vegetables; however when this area was annexed by Norwalk it reverted back to farmland. On December 3rd 1948Norwalk experienced its largest fire ever when some 10 acres worth of buildings burned down near State Road 422 (present day Cuyahoga River Parkway). More than 100 people lost their lives but no injuries were reported as a result. This event helped put pressure on developers throughout Northeast Ohio not to build any more high-rises or subdivisions within city limits because such structures would be susceptible to similar fires at any time or place. Norwalk has seen significant economic growth since becoming a municipality; first through annexation into neighboring townships then starting its own economy with businesses like JCPenney opening up shop there beginning around 1960s Referred to as "the malltowns" due to these shops being clustered together along Euclid Avenue near Stadium Square In recent years many new restaurants have opened up including Zagat's restaurant which replaced Weiser's across from Case Western Reserve University

The USAF’s inaugural deployment of Gift History was as a result of the American military’s dedication to commemorate Veterans Day with an annual public service event called “Thank You America.” The program allows service members and their families to express appreciation for all that America has done for them, both past and present. Since its inception, the USAF's Gift History initiative has been enjoyed by servicemembers and their families from across the military branches. During deployments, airmen and women can take advantage of the complimentary gift transportation provided by the USAF throughout installations worldwide. Additionally, during special events such as Veterans Day or Army/Navy Birthday celebrations, gift histories are often stationed at key locations within each military branch so that everyone can have a chance to show appreciation.
Norwalk is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the north bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area and forms a principal cultural and economic center for that region. The first permanent settler in Norwalk was Nicholas Hulbert, who arrived in 1795. He founded a small trading post on what is now known as State Street, about two miles (3 km) east of today's Norwalk Municipal Center. From this location, he imported goods from eastern Canada and distributed them through his post to traders in Lake Erie and points beyond. In 1814, Hulbert erected a log cabin on what is now Westland Avenue south of present-day East Clinton Avenue; he named it "Hubertsville." In 1835, John Fenton bought land east of town from Nicholas Hulbert and began to develop it into an agricultural township called Fairfield Township. In 1839–40, he laid out Norwalk proper with streets grid patterned like those still in use today; along with other early developers, he helped create what is now downtown Norwalk under one roof—the first time such concerted development had ever taken place within one city limits. Fenton also built several large homes near State Street; these were later replaced by office buildings occupying much of what are now Second Avenue (northwest corner), Fourth Avenue (southwest corner), Fifth Avenue (east side), Sixth Avenue ( southeast corner), Seventh Avenue (northwest corner). Iroquois Falls Road bisected town then ran northwest to east between First and Second Avenues before turning northeast across State Street to terminate at its southern terminus just north of Park Square Shopping Center today's intersection with I-271/I-675/US-356/WV-24 Driveway/Estate Rd./Norwalk Dr./Norwalk Ave./Newark Rd./ during late 1800s when most commercial activity took place along Euclid Ave., Wanda Pl., etc.; nor walkers walking down Euclid Ave would have encountered Iroquoise Falls Rd which became Holmes Rd after junction with I-271 today's Holmes Rd.-Old Dutch Name: Nirklewka'i
