Norton is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. Norton was founded in 1812 by General George Rogers Clark and named for him. It became a city in 1907 and then a village in 1912. The current mayor is Darnell Earley. The land that now Norton was first settled by the Shawnee Indians. They arrived there during the French and Indian War as part of an expedition led by Captain Pierre-Jacques LaFontaine de Clermont-Tonkin. When they were driven out of their homeland by the British, they moved downriver to what is now Muskingum County and began to settle there. In 1812, General George Rogers Clark discovered land that would become Norton on the Scioto River west of present day Cincinnati. He named it for himself because he had discovered new lands while campaigning against Native Americans in Ohio during the War of 1812. In 1813, he laid out a town plan for Norton which included two streets wide and four deep instead of the customary three feet (0.9 m). This innovation would later be credited with being one of the factors that led to its growth as a city over time In 1907, Norton merged with neighboring village Hazard to form one municipality called Nortonville (). In 1916, annexations within Mortonville created separate townships: Clinton Township (to the east), Defiance Township (to the south), and Whitewater Township (to the northwest). In 1976–77, another annexation resulted in creation of additional townships: Delaware Township (to the southeast), Pickerington Township (to the northwest), Kentwood Township (to our southwest) and Wexford Township () to total 9 municipalities (). Today's Mayor Darnell Earley leads all 9 municipalities which encompass over 8 square miles (.27 km2) of territory including parts of Beech Grove Heights (), Bloomfield Hills (), Carpentersville (), Clarendon Heights () & East Liverpool (); North Canton () & Springboro (); West Chester (). As pertains to local government services provided through these entities - police officers are located within each municipality; fire fighters are located within neighborhoods; zoning regulations are enforced throughout - see below As stated earlier, Mayor Earley oversees all nine municipalities which include portionsof Beech Grove Heights (), Bloomfield Hills (), Carpentersville (), Clarendon Heights () & East Liverpool (); North Canton () & Springboro (); West Chester (). According to latest municipal filings made available online through OpenDataOhio/Canton Municipal Services Department - public records request filed on Apr 12th 2022 - there are currently no open positions or plans underway for any new hires necessary or desired within this municipality as at February 2023 there were 1 full-time equivalent position(s) vacant(s)). Additionally according to this same report - as per City Regulations set forth hereinabove - sidewalks have not been maintained across all boundaries encompassing every single municipality mentioned hereinabove since January 1st 2021 thru Februar 2023 inclusive; however Streets Alive! has successfully completed several sidewalk projectswithin individual municipalities totaling nearly $5K thus far in Fiscal Year 2022 alone!
