Norton is a small town in St. Clair County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton was founded in 1801 by James Norton and his wife Nelly as a farmstead on the Scioto River near modern-day Newark. In 1814, James and Nelly moved their farm to what is now Norton Township and developed it into a town. They named it after their father, James Norton Sr., who had settled in Ohio in 1788 and had been elected treasurer of Mahoning County. In 1824, they donated land to the city of Columbus for an urban cemetery; that same year, Norton Township was incorporated as a municipal corporation. The city of Columbus developed around Norton because of its importance as an industrial center for manufacturing goods such as textiles, shoes, cigars, soapstones and other products during the 19th century. By 1907, however, there were only two businesses left in Norton—a grocery store and a millinery store—and most residents Practice agriculture or continued to live on their farms. Norton was founded by John Norton in 1824. He purchased land on the northwest side of Columbus and built a log cabin which served as his home for the next thirty years. In 1854, he sold his property to David Welsh and moved to what is now known as Norton Park. From here, he continued to make his mark on the community by serving as director of public works for five years before retiring in 1870. Over time, other residents have joined him in this important role including William Harkness who served from 1876-1887 and then George Wessels who held that position from 1888-1912. In 1916, when Norton passed away at age 94, his local economy had already begun to change with the arrival of World War I Veteran General Leonard Wood during that year’s Great Migration which would lead to increased economic opportunities throughout Central Ohio such as Norton.
