Norton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat for Lake County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,812. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1802 by General John Norton as a trading post on the Great Miami River. In 1825, it was renamed Norton after its founder. The first town meeting in Norton took place on October 8, 1825; three days later, it re-incorporated as a village under the name of Dayton because its location on high ground made it an ideal site for a new town square. The first settler to arrive in what is now Norton was Isaac Watts who arrived with his family from Newark Delaware on December 7, 1800; he built a cabin near what is now North Main Street and First Avenue and named his settlement Newark Glen after himself and his father-in-law George Watkins (a surveyor). Some time between 1800 and 1802 General John Norton acquired 1,000 acres (400 ha) northwest ofpresent day Norton along with some other land purchases that led to its founding as a Village on October 8th1825 by three citizens: John Paris (of Paris Township), Jonathan Edwards (of Clinton Township), & Ebenezer Hanks (of Cuyahoga Falls). On July 5th 1830 Mayor James Fenton convened an election at which he received 253 votes against 184 cast for Samuel Kuryakin as Mayor Pro Tem; this event marked one of only two times when ELECTION OF MAYOR WAS NECESSARY BEFORE THE FORMALLY CHARGED CITY OF NORTON BEING CREATED ON JUNE 3rd 1830’s BASIS UNDER THE PROVISION OF ARTICLE VIII OF THE charter granted TO NORTON BY THE LEGISLATURE OF OHIO DURING ITS FIRST PERIODOF CONSTRUCTION

Norton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. The population was 38,815 at the 2010 census. Norton is known for its nightlife and for being home to the world's largest glass ceiling mural, "The Great American Glass Ceiling." The area that would become Norton was settled by German immigrants in 1824. In 1833, John Norton donated land to make a town square in what is now downtown Norton. In 1837, the first post office was established in Norton with Samuel Morse as its first clerk. In 1865, Mayor George Kapp appointed Hira Vail as master builder of the new City Hall which replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. Mayor Kapp also conferred upon Vail the title of " distinguished citizen". Norton became an incorporated village on July 1, 1870 when it amalgamated with Scioto Township to form Lucas County. The original plat for Norton included all of Scioto Township except for two small parcels including what are now parts of Overbrook and Cleveland Streets northeast of Main Street and these were annexed by Norton after incorporation. On October 15, 1907 commissioners from various towns in Lucas County met at First Presbyterian Church to authorize merger with surrounding townships under one management so as to provide more efficient services within their boundaries; this action led to annexation of Summit Township on November 2nd that year forming today's Downtown Norton along with portions of Mayfield Heights and New Brighton Heights along with most Sawmill Woods (now part of Mayfield) becoming part of Akron township form
Norton was founded by George Norton in 1825. The town was named for George Norton, the first settler. The first store in the town was built on the corner of North High and West Market streets. In 1829, Norton moved his business to what is now State Street. In 1831, when Ohio became a state, Norton donated land to the state for a courthouse and jail. In 1837, he donated land to serve as a public square in the town.
