Norton, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio located about 20 miles east of Cleveland. The population was 1,274 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1810 by Nathaniel Norton and named for him. Norton's father, also named Nathaniel Norton, had come to what is now northeastern Ohio from Connecticut in 1795. In 1810, Nathaniel and his father bought 5 acres of land near where they lived from John Crocker. They started a gristmill on the stream that ran through their farm and also erected a small log cabin as their home. The first post office in Norton was established in 1811. In 1815, they built a larger cabin on the present site of the town hall. In 1830, they donated an acre of their property to be used as a public square in town center). In 1865-1866, Norton became part of the new state of Michigan when it was created from parts of five other states during the American Civil War. When it re-appeared as an independent county seat after Michigan’s reunification in 1965, norton chose not to change its name to honor its lost community during the war years but reverted back to its original name—Norton Township—in tribute to both its founding fathers and all who have participated in its growth over those 101 years
