Norton, Ohio is a city located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 381 at the 2010 census, up from 345 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Muskingum County and home to Northeastern University. Norton was founded by Nathaniel Norton in 1792 as a small village on the Scioto River near modern-day Portsmouth, Ohio.[1] In 1812, during the Northwest Indian War, Norton's settlements were looted and burned by British troops commanded by General John Stark. Nathaniel Norton rebuilt his village and named it after himself in honor of his victory over these soldiers. In 1814, he became one of the first townships in Muskingum County when it was organized from parts of Dayton Township and Xenia Township. He served as its first mayor from 1818 to 1830;[2][3] he also served as treasurer and justice of peace for Muskingum County for many years before dying in office on February 5, 1840.[4] After his death, Norton's wife assumed control of their estate and continued to live there until her death in 1853; she bequeathed her entire estate to Northeastern University.[5][6][7] The town has remained an agricultural center ever since with operations centered around growing crops such as corn (maize), soybeans, cotton, potatoes, etc., but also manufacturing processes such as Clothing Manufacturing Company No 1,[8][9] George Custer Manufacturing Company No 2,[10], United States Rubber Company No 1,[11],[12], Ford Motor Company No 1,[13],[14], American Tobacco Products Incorporated No 3[15],[16]), Furniture Manufacturer’s Association [FMA]-Clothing Factory #1 (later renamed Eaton furniture factory), Rubber Manufacturer’s Association [RMA]-Furniture Factory #2 (later renamed Maytag rubber factory), Machine Shop Corporation-[MSC]-Manufacturing Establishment #1
Norton was founded in 1795 by General George Washington. The town grew rapidly in the 1800s, and during its peak it had a population of over 20,000 people. In 1815, Norton became an Ohio county and was named after General Washington's father, Colonel Nathanael Norton.
