Norton, Ohio is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Ohio. The population was 9,352 at the 2000 census. Norton has been inhabited since the 17th century. The first settler in Norton was George Washington and his family who arrived in 1788. The town began to grow rapidly during the early 19th century because of its location on the Great Lakes region and its access to transportation including railroads. By 1871, Norton had a population of 20,000. In 1865, Nortons first school opened after years of hard work by citizens and donations from local businesses. In 1922, Nortons first grocery store opened followed by a post office in 1925.During World War II, Norton became an important manufacturing center for munitions due to its proximity to many factories (including General Electric) and military production sites. After the war, nortons economy slowly declined as manufacturing moved offshore or out of state until it revived in the 1990s with investments from private individuals and foundations such as Ford Motor Company and Time Warner Incorporated One significant event that took place in Norton during this time was the opening of Ohio State University in 1870 which helped revive local businesses and begin what would become one of Nortons most successful economic campaigns- an effort called "The Giving season." During this campaign nortons residents donated over $1 million dollars to OSU which helped create new endowed professorships and provide scholarships for students. Norton is a city in the United States. The population was 16,816 at the 2010 census. Norton is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the southern edge of Akron, across from Canton. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Norton were French traders and missionaries in 1798. They founded a mission station on an island in nearby Lake Erie called Fort Niagara. In 1800, General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed Fort Niagara and plundered its contents; this event is commemorated by a bronze plaque at the local park that reads "In Memory of Anthony Wayne: December 25th 1800". In 1814, James Kapp bought land east of present-day Norton and developed it into a town named after him. He named it Kappstown after himself, his father and two brothers who had died in frontier duty during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1835, he sold all his remaining land west of Norton to John Dennison for $1 million dollars ($ today). Dennison built mills there which became known as the "Kapp Mill". The city was incorporated on April 12, 1837 by act of Congress under one name or another but always with reference to Kappstown – until 1928 when it changed to Norton because that was its original name within Cleveland's limits. Norton was founded by General George Washington and his bride Penelope Ellicott in 1790. Norton's first store opened in 1800 on the east side of the village and continued to be open until 1892 when it burned down. The first post office opened in 1802 and was called Newtown until it changed its name to Norton in 1853. In 1916, Norton took its current name from American mathematician and educator Ole Atkinson Norton (1864-1948). The community of Norton formed around an Agricultural Fair which took place annually at Sawmill Hill on July 4th from 1800 to 1860. The fairgrounds are now known as Elm Grove Park and include a museum that tells the story of the fairgrounds, including exhibits on early settlers, mills, sawmills, Agriculture Department exhibits, World War I vintage munitions storage facilities and more. More than 100 local businesses participated in Saturday morning market activities throughout the years including hay rides (until 1907), pumpkin picking (until 1903), pie baking contests (until 1909),clipse viewing Parties (from 1912 - 1937) There have also been several festivals over time such as Pumpkinfestivals(1978-1980),Country Fair(1994-1996) produced by Patterson’s Country Store & Rodeo Grounds & held at various locations throughout our community then we had Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish Church Folkloric Dance Celebration On October 5th which included historical music played by Heritage Orchestra conducted by Dick Easley beginning at 7pm with refreshments served after church services followed by dancing until late evening
