Norton is a small town situated on a bend in the Scioto River and its residents are known for their production of corn, soybeans, apples, chicken eggs, dairy products and other agricultural products. Norton's ZIP code is 45402. The community was founded in 1836 by John Norton and James Silloway as a trading post on the Scioto River. It became a town in 1853 when it was named for Norton's father-in-law who had bought land there. In 1907, Nortons merged with neighboring townships to form what is now called Trumbull County. The first settlers arrived from Pennsylvania in 1836 and built log homes around a trading post that they called "Norton Station." They developed crops such as corn, soybeans, apples and chickens but soon abandoned these activities because of lack of access to water or markets. A new settlement was established downstream at Portsmouth where Ezekiel Eaton founded his grocery store in 1840. By 1850 however, trade along the Scioto River had dwindled so much that Norton decided to move back upstream into what is now Trumbull County as part of an effort to revive business activity among local farmers. Norton, Ohio is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Norton was founded in 1814 by Captain John Norton and his wife Betsy. The first store in Norton was built on the court house square. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had a total of seventy-six residents. In 1834, Captain Norton donated land to create a public school district which would serve the town and its growing population. By 1840, Norton had a population of two hundred people and four stores. In 1851, the new courthouse was built and the first post office opened in Norton. By 1870, there were ten businesses in Norton with a total population of one thousand six hundred fifty-eight residents. By 1880, three stores still operated in downtown Norton while seven other businesses contributed to the community's growth including five lumberyards and four printing offices. within sixty years of incorporation as an unincorporated village (and only after several bylaws were changed), Norton had become one of Trumbull County's most important communities with over one thousand residents spread throughout fifteen neighborhoods plus another dozen or so small businesses servingrafted into its fabric Norton experienced significant economic growth following World War II as jobs opportunities increased due to military production contracts that brought new life to local towns across America during that time period such as Thompson International Paper Company (TIPP) located just upriver from downtown where construction crews worked day and night for weeks on end creating some of America's earliest skyscrapers – Construction began on One Trenton Place right before Christmas 1945!
