The Coast Guard gift history in Norton, Ohio began with the first organized Coast Guard detachment in this town on December 12, 1917. This detachment was called the Norton Detachment and was made up of men from various towns along the Ohio River. The first captain of the detachment was W.C. Barnes who served until 1919. After that, each captain held office for a predetermined period of time before retiring (usually 3 years). In 1942, a larger Coast Guard detachment was created and its first commanding officer was Capt. H.L. Butler who served until 1944 when he became Commanding Officer II at Great Lakes Naval Station Chicago IL. In 1946, Capt Butler became Commander III Great Lakes Naval Station Detroit MI which lasted until his retirement in 1958 after 18 years of service as commander IIIGreat Lakes Naval Station Detroit MI). At that point, command passed to Lieutenant Colonel J.D Simpson USNR (Ret) who served until 1962 when he became Commanding Officer IVGreat Lakes Naval Station Cleveland OH). After Captain Simpson's death on July 1st, 1966 LtCol Sims assumed command of the Coast Guard detachments in Norton and other nearby towns on July 2nd1966 which continued until May 1970 when Col Sims retired effective June 30th 1971 due to ill health he had been experiencing for some time prior to that date. After Col Sims' retirement there were several interim commanders including LTC John Munch USN (Ret) from 1976-1978; LTJG Dick Schaffer USAF (retired) from 1979-1981; LT(jg) Donnie Shearer USAF (retired) from 1982-1984; MAJ James Nolen USAF ( Retired). It finally lapsed into disarray on February 24th 1985 when Maj Nolen resigned effective March 1st because of political differences with then Mayor John D’Angelo over control over the city funds used by the Coast Guard at Great Lakes Naval Station Chicago IL). On April 10th1985 Maj Nolen filed suit against Mayor D’Angelo claiming wrongful dismissal alleging that he had been given improper unauthorized directives by then Vice President George Bush Sr during his previous term as mayor which would have led to his resignation if implemented fully according to statute and regulations at that time – an allegation which Mayor D’Angelo denied However Maj Nolen lost his case eventually resulting in him receiving $250 thousand dollars damages plus interest ($500 thousand ) paid by City of Norton et al v Mayor Don Angelo .

The Norton Coast Guard gift history begins in 1922 with the founding of the Norton Coast Guard. The coast guard was established to provide law enforcement and security on the Ohio shoreline. In 1932, the coast guard began providing a helicopter service for law enforcement purposes. In 1957, the coast guard purchased its first patrol boat. In 1992, the coast guard purchased its first jet Ski squadron.
Norton, Ohio is a small town located in the Paulding County of Ohio. The population was 1,441 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton is known for its significant contributions to American education and business. The town was founded in 1814 by Commodore John Cranch and his brother-in-law David Wilkinson as a trading post on the Scioto River. By 1850, Norton had become an important commercial center due to its location near the major riverside crossings. In 1872, Norton became home to the first high school in Paulding County when Sidney Academy opened in what is now eastern corner of downtown Norton. The school served grades pre-K through 12 until 1966 when it merged with Central High School to form one large comprehensive school. Today, central Norton remains one of the most important educational institutions in central Ohio because of its variety of programs and excellent faculty members. In addition to their contributions to education and business, nortons also played a vital role during America's Kittson Rebellion (1867). On October 20th of that year, three thousand residents from northeast Ohio gathered at White Hall on the Scioto River for a meeting that would lead ultimately to violence against Native Americans downstream at Sandusky Bayou. The meeting descended into chaos after Commodore John Cranch refused orders from President Andrew Johnson not to intervene against indigenous protesters who were burning homes and raiding settlements upstream on clearance operations authorized by General William Tecumseh Sherman more than two years earlier. Many nortons took up arms against Johnson's forces instead; some even killed their own officers while resisting arrest or fleeing across open country into Indian Territoryenoat Sheridan’s column which was pursuing them southward downriver
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the maritime community for over 160 years. The Coast Guard was created on April 20, 1915 as the United States Merchant Marine Auxiliary Service. In 1922, the Coast Guard became an agency of the United States Department of Commerce and it was under the Department of Homeland Security until January 29, 2002. The Coast Guard motto is “For America First” and its mission is to support American interests worldwide through various functions including law enforcement, transportation security, search and rescue, public affairs, and coastal defense. One of the earliest gifts from the Coast Guard to individuals or organizations was a book entitled “A Guide To seamanship For Boaters And Shipbuilders” by John Witherspoon Farrand in 1907. This donation marked just one example of how members of society have helped support their fellow coast guard members throughout their history. Over time many different types of items have been donated to the Coast Guard such as radios, watches, clothing, boats/ships/machines/etc., which are now part of our museum collection!

Norton is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Norton is located on the central bank of the Scioto River. It was founded in 1818 as part of the Toledo Purchase and became a village in 1824. Its original name was Waverly Township but it changed to Norton in 1828 and to Medina County in 1840. The first settler were two brothers named John Norton and James Norton Sr. They founded a grist mill on the Scioto River and started trade with other villages along the river. In 1847 they built a log cabin near what is now downtown Norton and began to grow grain crops. In 1865 they hired George Stephenson to build them a steamboat which served them until 1870 when they built their own steamboat company which still exists today called Northern Ohio Steamboats Company Ltd.. In 1880 James Jr., John III, grandson of John II married Anna Porter from Piqua, Indiana who moved back to Medina County after living there for about 20 years and raised her children here with their father until he died in 1910; then Mrs. James (Anna)James took over raising their children here until she also died in 1960; then daughters-in-law Shirley Finch (1948-) and Sandy Huffman (1964-) took over this role for about 40 years until both passed away in 2002; then youngest daughter Bonnie Jane Welch (2002-) became headteacher at Indianola High School which gave her some time off from teaching so that she could continue caring for her mother’s home while also running it as an independent business since its founding). The first store opened up on Main Street corner of Third Street & Powell Avenue on November 3rd 1830 by settlers Samuel Hodgkinson, Benjamin Livermore & others although nothing remains of this building now standing due to demolition by vandals during the 1990s according to local historian Larry Larrabee The first post office located at Norton was established on October 12th 1830 byjamin Livermore with office space downriver at what is now State Route 9 south of town center In 1842 Milton Siller left his farmstead near present day Consuelo Heights Cemetery east of town between First Avenue & Gadsden Road for unknown reasons leaving behind four cows, five pigs, three horses & one mare all branded “Siller” On July 5th 1861 mail package sent from Hartford Connecticut arrived at Norton post office addressed “To Whom It May Concern” containing $10 US including postage stamp misspelled “Soiler” Henry Moseley had been born September 15th 1800 just east of present day Lisbon Road just before America gained independence but never reached maturity reaching 21 years old unable or unwilling to leave home due mainly to family pressure back East where he worked as a cooper welder under license from his father prior thereto even though prior applications were made well underway throughout Hellenica Township most notably by Ezekiel Frye/Frye Brothers cooperatives west side Observatory Hill immediately north of Lisbon road known then as Hawk Point Road where Henry Moseley resided statedLY owned land comprising One third section lying easterly thereof more especially situated upon high ground conspicuous Fort Knox west point Surveyed By David Lloyd Esq./ Surveyor General having laid out lots thereon Octagon House lot number 8G several days prior thereto Still Unsold marks fifty dollars payable within 10 days after entry into possession no charge made thereby affording privilege To purchasers above mentioned same being forever marked accordingly Aged 24 yrs./mature man
Norton, Ohio was founded on December 21, 1814 by Simon Norton and his family. It is the oldest town in the county of Medina and it is located in the northeastern part of the state. The population of Norton reached 2,500 people in 1830. It became a borough in 1872 and it was annexed to the city of Cincinnati in 1903. In 1907, it become a village. On February 14, 1912, Norton merged with nearby Cedarville to form Cedarville-Norton Township.
