The city has experienced growth since 2000 when it annexed neighboring unincorporated areas including Beech Grove Heights and Westlake Village. North Royalton is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,723 at the 2010 census. North Royalton is part of the Dayton–Urbana-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now NorthRoyalton were the Weems family who arrived from Connecticut in 1796. Henry Weems and his wife Martha (née Higginson) built a log cabin on what is now Second Street in 1801. They were followed by other pioneer families such as the Bogan, Dickinson, and Rankins families. By 1800 there were over 100 citizens living in what is today North Royalton. In 1814, General Jackson's military forces invaded West Virginia and destroyed much of that state's infrastructure including bridges and roads. This resulted in an economic recession for Delaware County which had been heavily dependent on agriculture since the early eighteenth century. George Stephenson developed plans to build a canal through central Ohio which would have relieved this problem but died before construction could begin. After Jackson's invasion, local farmers began to develop new crops such as corn and beans while also resumed their old livestock husbandry practices including raising horses, pigs, cattle, sheep, and hogs. In 1822 Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter visited Delaware County and declared that "the country must be given up to agriculture or it will soon become uninhabitable." Dixon Porter designated land east of Beaver Creek as Delaware Township while leaving western side of Beaver Creek unenclosed for development until after his death in 1865 when it was annexed by Dayton Township into which NorthRoyalton had previously been incorporated During the 1840s several churches were built around town including First Congregational Missionary Baptist Church (now demolished), Methodist Episcopal Church (later replaced by Zion Lutheran), Christian Brothers School (now defunct), Presbyterian Church (later replaced by First Presbyterian), Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland (later absorbed into larger metropolitan area diocese), Assemblies of God church (now abandoned). According to one source: "There are likely more than 20 churches still standing from those days... Most likely they all went out of business during or after the Civil War." In 1850 The Cincinnati Daily Gazette reported that "northwestern Ohio has some excellent prospects for agricultural production" due to increased demand for hay because of increasing industrialization throughout America; however oats remained primary crop with wheat accounting for about 60% export revenue at that time .
