North Ridgeville is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Ridgeville was founded in 1827 as a small community on the north side of the Scioto River. The first settler in what would become North Ridgeville was John Greenleaf Whittier. He and his brother Isaac founded a gristmill and sawmill in 1827 on what is now Park Avenue. In 1830, they also built a schoolhouse and store on Washington Street which still stand today. After Whittier's death in 1836, his widow Dora took over running the mill until her death in 1840; then John Greenleaf Jr., she son took over management of the mill until it passed into private hands again in 1848 when it became part of the Chillicothe Canning Company. In 1850, thanks to an Act of Congress passed during President James K. Polk's administration, all canning operations were moved from Philadelphia to Troy, New York because that was considered by then to be an "industrial center." This event led to some tension between Chillicothe Canning Company directors and residents of North Ridgeville because many felt their goods had been taken advantage of while Troy enjoyed increased prosperity due to its new industrial status quo. In 1870, however, following reorganization within the American Tobacco Company (ATC), North Ridgeville Became ATC's factory town for manufacturing cigarettes among other products; this period also marked an increase in industryONTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS
