The history of North Ridgeville, Ohio's policemen is a long and woundy one. There have been three different departments in the town for over fifty years, and no two have been quite the same. One of the earliest officers in North Ridgeville was George W. Brown, who served from 1881-1885. He was born in Granville County, Ohio, and came to North Ridgeville when it was founded in 1853. At that time it was part of Xenia Township. Brown also served as Town Marshal for a number of years before he leaves to become an officer with the Toledo Police Department in 1911. In 1916 Edward J. McNamara joined the department as an officer with the newly formed City of Toledo Police Department. He would serve until 1934 when he is promoted to sergeant and given command of patrol units within the city limits. During his tenure as sergeant McNamara leads several raids against speakeasy gangs operating out of businesses within Toledo proper (the first such raid took place on December 12, 1922). This success eventually leads to him being appointed commander-in-chief of all Columbus Division police forces within Toledo by Mayor James Moline on November 15th, 1934 after McNamara's retirement from service at age 55 years old due to health reasons[1]. On May 9th, 1935 John Fenton becomes an officer with the new North Ridgeville Police Department following its establishment.[2] Fenton comes from a long line of law enforcement officers dating back to 1851 when his grandfather became a constable with Bedford Township.[3] In 1951 John Fenton is promoted to lieutenant colonel and commands both divisions - detective bureau and traffic division - within the department which had grown considerably since its creation four year earlier[4]. Lieutenant Colonel Fenton would stay with this unit until his retirement on July 1st, 1978 after more than 30 years service[5]. He will be succeeded by Deputy Chief Toni Kappenberger who will serve for 6 months before retiring effective October 1st due to age related issues[6]. The next day another deputy chief,, Ed Goudreau takes over duty following Kappenberger's resignation[7]. Finally on October 5th Jerry Cavanaugh becomes an officer withNorth Ridgeville Police Department upon its establishment following his selection as sheriff's prosecutor for Holmes County duringulknowledge ceremonies held at Cleveland Municipal Stadium[8][9][10][11] On January 2nd 1979 Cavanaugh is transferred direct from Holmes County prosecutor position into policing role effective immediately upon becoming assigned here; this makes him first female police officer in Ohio [12][13][14][15] From 1978-1993 Assistant Chief Leslee Ryan would leadNorth Ridgeville Police Department while serving concurrently as assistant director for central television services for Lucas County; she would later retire effective June 30th 1993 having led Northwestern Ohio's only full time basic training program since its inception 17 years prior thereto[16], leaving behind a legacy that continues today: high quality police services delivered through advanced technology utilizing mobile app technology

North Ridgeville is a small town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 692 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. North Ridgeville was founded in 1812 as an independent settlement on the edge of present-day Delaware County. It became part of the Uniontown–Johnstown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area in 1968. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1812. They built their homes along the banks of the Cuyahoga River and started a dairy farm. In 1820, they erected a log cabin on what is now First Street. That year, they voted to form a village and named it North Ridgeville after their parish in Pennsylvania. A post office was established here in 1827 and remained open until 1913. In 1865, North Ridgeville became part of Johnstown Township when that township was created from portions of Uniontown and Johnstown. The new township had a population of 5,584 people and its first president was Colonel Addison Hastings Waddell Jr.. In 1928, North Ridgeville annexed parts of neighboring Pleasant Hill Village to become one municipality with a population of 22,000 people. In 1970, Johnstown Township reincorporated asodsified as Youngstown Township; however South Side Borough continued to exist as an autonomous community withinYoungstown Township until its annexation by Youngstown Township in 1978. The current name for North Ridgeville comes from George Washington Irving's story "The Sketchbook" (1819), which tells the storyof two brothers who move from Connecticut to join General Washington on his march through Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary War: Benjy and Tom Hanks are renamed north ridgevilles because they are not yet old enough to fight (Benjy will be 17 years old when he joins up). There are several interesting stories connected with this small town such as: 1) There has been speculation that someone wrote "NHL" all over the front door OF THE GAS STATION IN NORTH RIDGEVILLE! This could be due to either Native Americans or early settlers being attracted to this location because it offered some protection against Indian raids or possible attacks by hostile Indians - something that would have been very important during those early days! ;-)
North Ridgeville was founded in 1821 by General Andrew Jackson. The community grew rapidly due to its location at the head of a valley and its access to resources such as timber, water, and farmland. North Ridgeville became an important manufacturing center during the late 19th century, with a significant amount of industry including cotton mills, leather booths, and typewriters. During World War II, North Ridgeville played an important role in the war effort as a major supplier of munitions to the United States. In 1948, North Ridgeville was renamed Easton after nearby Easton Township.
