North Ridgeville is a small town in the west side of Ohio, about 20 miles northwest of Cincinnati. It was founded in 1811 by John Ridge (1768-1848), a Revolutionary War veteran and slave owner, and his wife Elizabeth. The community was originally called Richland Township but changed its name to North Ridgeville in 1881 after the ridge that runs through the town. North Ridgeville is located on the bank of the Little Miami River, which forms part of the border between Hamilton County and Butler County. In 1915 it had a population of just over 100 people; today it has a population of around 30. North Ridgeville's growth has been due in part to its location: on high ground overlooking both the river and some major industrial plants in neighboring towns, as well as access to education and other amenities that have lured people here since before white settlement began. The first school in North Ridgeville was established in 1811, serving children living nearRichland Township's boundary with Hamilton County. A second school opened in 1847, followed by another in 1861; these were replaced by one large building for instruction from 1850 until 1953 when it burned down. In 1886, when a new elementary school was built across the river from Richland Township*, this too served as an important factor in increasing enrollment at North Ridgeville Schools*. After years of progressivism* during World War II†the number of students attending public schools declined gradually throughout most of the 1950s†until reaching a low point around 1970†before increasing again during the 1990s‡; however*, recent trends suggest that there may be room for further decrease still*; nonetheless, public education remains an important aspectof life here.* The original inhabitants who settled along this stretch of Little Miami River included several families who arrived beginning around 1790.* One group’s descendants still live hereabouts and are known as “The First Families” because they once owned or leased more than fifty acres (20 hectares) within what is now Northridgeville limits* while others have moved away or left completely since then*.
