The Ohio National Guard was first organized on December 16, 1792. It was the result of the Articles of Confederation, a document that proposed the creation of a national government for all the states in America. The original regiment consisted of twenty-four companies and was raised in Ridgeville, Ohio. The unit served at various engagements during the War for Independence and were disbanded on November 30, 1815. On July 2, 1861, North Ridgeville's militia company became part of the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant when he arrived in town to take command of Union forces opposing Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee. The unit fought throughout the Civil War and saw heavy combat at Monmouth Junction (April 1862), First Bull Run (July 1862), Antietam (September 1862), Gettysburg (March 1863), and Petersburg Peninsula (December 1865). After the war ended, many men from North Ridgeville's militia company re-enlisted in order to serve through Reconstruction in South Carolina and Georgia. The Ohio National Guard has since been disbanded but its history is still well remembered by residents in North Ridgeville today. Today's units are made up primarily of Reserve members who are called up for an event or emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack.

The North Ridgeville, Ohio Army National Guard unit was created on December 16, 1941 when the United StatesArmy activated the 96th Infantry Division in response to Pearl Harbor. The division was redesignated as the 168th Infantry Division on January 1, 1942 and then again as the 169th Infantry Division on February 9, 1942. On May 3rd, 1942, both divisions were re-designated as the 609th Infantry Regiment and assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 422nd Brigade Combat Team which was also activated in response to Pearl Harbor. The brigade combat team became operational with its first troops on October 15th. The regiment was later reassigned to Headquarters Company (HC) of III Corps' 555th Brigade Combat Team which also responded to Pearl Harbor. In 1945, both HHC's were disbanded and their units absorbed into other commands within III Corps or returned home to civilian life.
North Ridgeville is an unincorporated community in Mahoning County, Ohio, located on the north side of the Scioto River. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Canton-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Ridgeville is one of three villages in Lima Township; the other villages are Southridge and West Ridgeway. North Ridgeville was platted in 1836 by members of a group that included John Crouse and his brother James Crouse. The name comes from a ridge running east-west near its center. The village was first called "Upper Edgeville". A post office was established in 1839, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1857. The Village of Upper Edgeville changed its name to North Ridgeville in honor of George Washington Irving's residence at Newburgh on Long Island City's Upper Edgeville estate. It became part of Mahoning County when it was formed in 1837. The first settler here, Noah Webster, arrived with his family from Connecticut about 1830. He built a log cabin known as Webster's Cabin on what is now State Route 623 near present day Northridge Elementary School (now part of Harper Middle School).Webster died hereabouts before he could take his family west to escape Indian hostilities around this time around Lake Erie which continued until 1795 or so when British forces burned down much of Fort Niagara along with many other sites including Canada's largest city Toronto which had become an important trade center thanks to developments like Canuck Paper Company & Globe Rubber works - all being founded within 25 miles or so of each other! The area later became settled by Germans who migrated after battles between American forces and Native Americans following land giveaways during the Northwest Boundary Treaty settlement process finalized back East via President George Washington’s “3 Amended Treaties” ratified December 16th 1800….. resulting in ceded territory forming Mississippian Territory extending from Georgian Bay to provide for future settlers….much like our current state today! By 1860 there were more than 300 German families living here…..encompassing both men and women……..some still working farms/manufacturing products such as flour & sugar while others owning businesses such as hotels/laundries……… some still attending religious services Provided by pastors recruited locally…………….and soon enough schools were also added…………..all overseen by local school board members appointed by county commissioners! In 1916 North Ridgevile had a total population over 1000 residents………………………………………………………………………..making it one of only 3 ruralvillages remaining entire within Mahoning County up until then! Although serving primarily agricultural activities through most years past many folks have taken pride & pleasure involvement with various aspects not just their community but also beyond simply residing here……………be it volunteers domestic relief efforts during natural disasters such as March 2011 tornado outbreak; hosting annual 4H Expo fundraiser various fundraising auctions etc…………………or even those involved with club sports teams either playing off season or full year…………….. longtime citizens always striving for excellence no matter how small or extenuating circumstances might come into play ! Today North Ridgevillians remain friendly neighbors willing to lend a listening ear and assist if needed !!
