After becoming an official city, North Olmsted began receiving federal funding through programs like Wartime Tax Relief Act and GI Bill benefits which helped support its citizensduring wartime times. North Olmsted is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the county seat of Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,898. North Olmsted is home to The University of Toledo and The University of Akron. It was founded by John Hennepin in 1814 as a small farming community on the eastern edge of present-day Toledo, then part of the Northwest Territory. In 1827, it became an independent town when other villages surrounding it merged into its borders. The name "Olmsted" derives from George Washington's1795 purchase from Daniel Boone of 640 acres (250 ha) in what is now Lucas County for $10 per acre (4 ha). In 1840, General David Dayton founded Orchard Heights cemetery as one of several Protestant cemeteries in central Ohio to serve intellectually limited groups such as teachers and soldiers who were not able or willing to maintain traditional burial grounds elsewhere. After Dayton's death in 1845, his widow donated land comprising much of today's north side streets and squares to be used for burials purposes only; this original donation remains unchallenged as one among many significant contributions made by her husband to Cleveland during his life time. From 1800 until 1908, North Olmsted had no school district; all students attending schools within or bordering on the city were taught by private daycare providers until 1920 when a new public school building was erected on Saginaw Street between High Street and Union Avenue East; that building still serves as North Olmsted City Hall today. The first post office opened in 1816 with a reply rate averaging 1 per week; rates gradually increased over time reaching 7 per week by 1850 due largely to increased mail traffic generated by Native American Wars fought nearby along Lake Erie/the lower Great Lakes region which had become available through greatly enlarged railroad access following the end of hostilities in 1815-1816 via Treaty Of Paris ending those wars which had caused so much destruction throughout both nations including significant loss of life along with vast amounts Fletcher goods including lumber brought overland from Canada via York River route
