North Olmsted, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lorain County. The population was 57,543 as of the 2010 Census, making it the third-largest city in Lorain County after Cleveland and Youngstown. North Olmsted is located on the southern edge of Lake Erie, opposite Buffalo, New York. North Olmsted has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army besieged and destroyed Fort Dearborn at what is now northbound I-670/I-480 interchange; this stopped British raids on neighboring Monroe Township from advancing into central Ohio. The Portage Road bridge across Licking River served as a key link between Canada (west) and points east until 1925 when Interstate 80 was built through much of northeastern Ohio bypassing downtown Toledo In 1836 the township was organized under territorial government; it became part of Warren County in 1846. On November 3, 1868 North Olmsted voters passed an ordinance to create their own police department which would serve as "the first municipal police force in America." On May 1st 1870 incorporation took place with a population of 29 residents; by 1880 there were nearly 350 residents living within town limits alone! The first post office opened in North Olmsted on December 12th 1870 (closed on January 14th 1971). By 1902 there were over 400 businesses operating out of town! In 1916 steel production began at Ford Motor Company's Carling plant northeast of town; this developed into what is now known as "The Steel Age". The industry reached its peak during World War II with production totaling 2 million tons shipped from North Olmsted to various Allied countries; however due toarta postwar recession many factories closed down . Today steelmaking remains a major economic activity but Automotive production has also become significant with several large companies locating here including Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and DaimlerChrysler AG . Other industries that have thrived over the years include healthcare (due to its proximity to Akron), community services such as taking care of elderly citizens or having disabled citizens assisted through employment opportunities (AARP being one notable example), educational opportunities such as Moore Community College and Middletown Area Senior High School
