North Canton is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Mahoning County. North Canton is located on the southern edge of the unincorporated community of Fallston and is surrounded by land belonging to the towns of Eastlake and Westlake. Prior to European settlement, what are now North Canton and Fallston were part of the Shawnee Nation territory. On October 26, 1796, after a three-day battle with British forces led by General William Heath Marcy at Fallen Timbers Creek outside present-day North Canton, Ohio, the Shawnees lost their last major battle against American forces; this ended their resistance to American expansionism in central Ohio. The first settler in what are now North Canton and Fallston was John Morse who built a log cabin on his farmstead about 1800. By 1810 most of what are now North Canton and Fallston had been surveyed and planned as an agricultural township by James Kieft. In 1811 it became part of Medina Township when that township was created from parts of Scioto Township, Waterville Township, Fort Pitt Township (now Delaware), Bloomfield Township (now Conneaut) and Lucasville Village (now Toledo). In 1813 it became part of Ashtabula County when Ashtabula County was created from parts of Portage County. On November 1, 1825 Sylvester Calkins offered two acres (0.8 km2) south side of Main Street in present-day North Canton for purchase by George Fenton for $600 (). There may have been others who made offers for this land during that year; however nothing definitive has been found about all these transactions. The location where Fenton purchased this land later became known as "Canton". In 1830 US marshal Cornelius Wooten explored if there were any lands east or north side Providence Road which would make uppresent- day Springboro Heights neighborhood in northeast Cleveland; he found none but negotiated with several landowners until he obtained 3½ miles² from Nicholas Larkin on April 6,.1831 (). This grant made possible Wooten's founding as one half owner () with fellow US marshal Eli Whitney (), also founder () of Springboro Heights Neighborhood Association (). That same year Anthony Waynes acquired 640 acres near modern day Akron called "Waynesburg" (), making it become one half owner () with fellow US marshall Levi Coffin (); both men served as trustees () until 1850 when they sold all their holdings back to Nicholas Larkin (). At this time US Marshals ceased being appointed trustees so Bayard Taylor replaced them as trustee emeritus (). Additionally during those years some other settlements such as Haggertys Settlements east side Providence Road between Springboro Heights neighborhoods - grove off road just before Interstate 75 exits - came into existence while many others closed down because lack or interest from settlers or problems like disease caused by Indians living closeby .
