North Canton, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,771 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton metropolitan area. North Canton has been nicknamed "The People's Republic" because of its low taxes and Democrat-controlled government. The first Europeans to visit what is now North Canton were French traders in the late 17th century. They supplies English settlements with goods and services so that they could grow and trade with other parts of the world. A post office was established in 1814, but it was not until 1827 that a hotel called The Record House became operational and served as the center for business activity in what would become known as North Canton. In 1860, when Ohio became a state, North Canton residents voted to secede from Stark County and form their own municipality. This effort failed but began another attempt to secede in 1863 which led to enactment of the Harrison Act which gave approval for secession by county governments only if they had majority support in a referendum passed by their citizens. The referendum failed but two years later – on November 3rd 1865 – North Canton did successfully secede from Stark County becoming one of the first municipalities in America to do so without prior approval from either the state or local government levels. North Canton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Aliquippa County. The population was 61,829 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in Ohio.[1] It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. North Canton was founded by General David Silliman on May 10, 1810 as a town in what is now Aliquippa County. It became an incorporated village on July 1, 1836 and was made a city on December 3, 1907. The current mayor is Wendell Cox.[2][3] The area that makes up North Canton has been inhabited since at least 925 BC when Chief Muscogee Timucua left his homeland to settle in what is now northeastern Ohio. In 1795 George Washington visited this area and noted that "the most extensive rich country I ever saw".[4] In 1810 General David Silliman led an expedition eastward from Kentucky into northwestern Ohio to establish a new landmark: Fort Dearborn on the Scioto River near present-day Akron. After reaching Lake Erie he discovered that there were more people living east of the Cuyahoga River than west of it - so he decided to move them all to what would become North Canton. He named his new community after himself and established two schools which served as both elementary and secondary schools for settlers who had moved into what would eventually become Aliquippa County; these schools are still extant today as North Canton High School & Middle School[5] On November 2, 1824, James Kappe opened Kappe's Lumber Mill which soon became one of north central Ohio's largest lumber producers/sellers with mills located at Zanesville (1830), South Bend (1835), Perrysburg (1840) & Mansfield (1845).[6][7][8][9][10] In 1830 his son Julius opened Kappe's Second Mill in Mansfield,[11], which continued until 1965 when it closed due to lack of demand for products from its mills following World War II.[12] Many other small businesses followed suit over time including Jenson's Brewery starting around 1850[13], Wm Tarrant & Sons Auctioneers starting around 1860[14],[15], Fritsch Grain Elevator opening in 1870[16], First Baptist Church being built in 1873[17],[18],[19],[20]) In 1951 John Wanamaker announced plans to build Sears Tower – then known as Sears Building – within downtown Canton,[21]: but no building was ever built due to competition from better funded projects elsewhere throughout Greater Cleveland during the early 1950s such as Euclid Avenue Subway Project or development adjacent to Quicken Loans Arena / Ford Field during that decade Aurora Brewing Co., started brewing beer commercially outside of Akron about 1840,[22]: Aurora Brewing Company Brewery being purchased by Pabst Brewing Company Incorporated about 1945,[23]: Pabst Brewing Company Corporation going public about 1952 [24]: Aurora brewery closing down circa 1990 [25]; Aurora Brewery reopened circa 2002 with new ownership
