North Canton, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Canton is home to the North Canton Lions (a professional baseball team), as well as three high schools: Hocking Valley High School, Stone Mountain High School and Mahoning Valley High School. The first post office in North Canton was opened in 1827. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location on the natural gas pipeline that connected Cleveland with other towns in the area. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in North Canton. In 1836, a school was built and named after Reverend John Denton of Delaware County who had come to preach at the local Methodist church. In 1854, two additions were made to the town; one adding a square block east of the original town center and another adding a square block west of it which became known as "the Triangle". These blocks added muchneeded housing for those living near central business district in what would become known as "the neighbourhoods". In 1886, North Canton incorporated as a village under state law which allowed for more democratic governance than earlier villages that were governed by an elected board of trustees. That same year saw annexation byAkron into Stark County and renamed North Canton then again to Akron from 1898 until 1927 when it reverted back to its original name following incorporation into Stark County again on February 17th 1927 In 1957-1958 five new high school buildings were erected adjoining Hocking Valley High School giving rise to what is now called "Stone Mountain HS." In 2007-2008 many residents voted not only did they want their high school moved closer to their workplaces but also desiredbranding changes including changing their Alma Mater from Hocking Valley HS to Stone Mountain HS making it one large united campus . Today's Stone Mountain HS offers students various sports programs along with opportunities for involvement in extracurricular activities such as drama/theatre/music programs , robotics club & debate
On November 15, 1800, Ohio was admitted to the United States as a new state. The area that became North Canton was part of the Northwest Territory and then the Northwest Territory of Ohio. On December 3, 1803, the territory was divided into three parts: the portion east of the Scioto River including North Canton and most of Dayton; the western portion which included Springfield and Cincinnati; and the eastern portion which included North Canton. On January 1, 1817, North Canton formed a separate government from Springfield with James Wilkinson as its first mayor. In 1819, it changed its name to Athens after General Andrew Jackson's victory in the Battle of Athena Bridge over the Scioto River. It also changed its boundaries to include all of what is now Hamilton County and much of Steuben County.
