The Niles community is located on the banks of the Maumee River. The first people to live in what is now Niles were farmers who arrived from East Anglia in England in 1814 and started a farming village known as Wellesborough on the west bank of the Maumee River. They named their settlement for Nicholas Niles, an Englishman who had come overland through Canada to join General George Rogers Clark's army during the American Revolutionary War. Niles was born November 25, 1798 (date unknown), within sight of present-day downtown Niles on Canandaigua Creek. He was one of thirteen children born to John andCharlotte (née Burt) Niles; his siblings included sisters Mary Ann (born December 12, 1799), Hannah (March 7, 1800), and Sarah Jane (July 5, 1803). In 1825, Nicholas' father died suddenly while he was attending a meeting of trustees for his estate; John took up farming again and continued to provide support for his family until 1830 when he decided to move away from home and start afresh with his own farmstead between Wellsville and Canandaigua Lakes. By 1830s most settlers in what became Lucas County were Methodists because they believed that Christianity would bring peace and prosperity into their lives. Methodism spread quickly among Quakers who lived nearby on Delaware Avenue in Cleveland – this area today is called "Quaker Square" – so by 1830 many Methodists had moved away from Wellesborough because they did not want their religious affiliation associated with a place where violence could erupt between groups of farmers or where crime rates were high due to strong influences from European immigrants living around them: these early residents were more likely to be craftsmen or independent entrepreneurs than farmers/chieftains like Nicholas Nile. Nicholas' older brother John joined him on his new farmstead about two miles east of present-day downtown Niles along Canandaigua Creek about 1840 after hearing about land grants being made available for farms near Stephenson Reservoir which lay just upstream from where he currently stands beside the riverbank south of Interstate 84 bridge across Maumee River: this grant allowed Nicholas’ older brotherJohn and others like him to purchase 100 acres (40 ha) around Stephenson Reservoir north of present day Downtown Niles along Canandaigua Creek until it was drained by 1913; afterwards it became part of today's Main Street neighborhood northwest cornerof First Avenueand Canal Street: According to one source there may have been up to 2 dozen brothers involved with purchasing/purchasing rights/granting land anywhere around Stephenson Reservoir north of town limits including parts now inside Downtown Youngstown & our current location! This group controlled much or all acreage along both banks [Canandaigua & Donora] lakes before statehood changes created canal locks preventing any further growth eastward beyond Dayton -thus limiting access downstream especially towards Kalamazoo!. One can only wonder how much farmland still remains within Lucas County boundaries despite over 180 years since first people settled here! Some other early pioneers also resided nearpresent day “Quaker Square” NE cornerof First Ave&Canal St.: these include James Kapp(1802-1886), Elijah Hockley(1804-1875), Samuel Morse(1795-1872) & others! In 1837 Dr[axton W.] Goodrich purchased an additional 400 acres/45ha adjoining Stephenson Reservoir northeast sideof town Limits coming downriver [west sidetoday]. At this time goodrich name changed Toeppenheimer but property remained under Goodrich family till 1915 when it passed hands again thru family membersto Mr[ohn] Auerbach . . . Today lots surrounding original Goodrich Mansion still stand back then!: some are owned by PNC Banknorthway redevelopment team working adjacentto structure formerly used byGoodrich family

Niles, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was estimated at 17,521 in 2010, making it the third-largest town in Lucas County afterdefunct Wheeling and Hudson City. The Niles School District is one of the largest school districts in Ohio with over 100,000 students and employs over 150 people. The area now known as Niles was first settled by French colonists in 1795 as part of Fort Pitt Township. It became a village on April 12, 1806 when it merged with the village of Portage to form the new municipality of Niles. On November 3, 1810, Niles was chartered as a city by an act of the United States Congress. In 1815–17, Indian raids destroyed much of downtown Niles before American troops arrived to suppress them; however, they recovered most important pieces within two years and again rebuilt downtown during Reconstruction under supervision from General David Ewing's Departmentof Indian Affairs office. The city's first mayor was John Haggerty (1816-20). In 1830s construction began on what would become today's Civic Center which opened in 1836 and served as the centerpiece for city government until 1909 when responsibility for government operations moved to what is now First National Bank Building (now Copley Plaza) across Broad Street from City Hall. In 1955–57 efforts were made to connect Parma Road eastward from downtown with I-71 through central business district but this proposal met opposition due to fears that development would encroach on historicalacre space around the old grist mill site where mills operated between 1840 and 1870
Niles Township was organized in 1821. The first settler, Moses Niles, came from Connecticut and founded the township on a tract of land he had purchased from the Sauk Tribe. The name is thought to be derived from the word "nile," meaning "to flow" or "to run."
