Niles is an unincorporated community in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. It lies on the Muskingum River, east of the town of Niles and west of the city of Cleveland. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The first mention of a marine gift in Niles comes from 1873 when J.M. Darling donated a barrel filled with live fish to help feed sailors on the river near where Niles now stands. Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,912. The city is located on the Muskingum River in Muskingum County and is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers to what is now Niles were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1681 as part of a larger group known as "The Company". They named their new land New Netherland after John Netherland, an Englishman who had settled there in 1624. The area that became Niles was originally called White Township by order of General James Moncrief during the American Revolutionary War because British forces had burned down all but one Indian village in that area two years earlier. In 1801, Niles became part of what was then Warren County and was renamed for General Nathan Bedford Forrest after he won fame at Battle of Fallen Timbers (1811). The city's first mayor was David Dennison and its first treasurer was Nicholas Brownell. In 1815, it incorporated as a town under the name Whitehall Township with a population limited to 100 residents due to high taxes assessed against it by Warren County authorities. That township would become Clinton Township when it merged into Muskingum County in 1821. In 1830, Niles annexed parts of neighboring Uniontown which had also recently become prosperous due to coalmining operations near Elizabeth Lake within its borders; this annexation led to another name change – this time becoming Niles Heights after Uniontown's new mayor helped secure funds for its construction from his own fortune – though most residents continued to call themselves "Nilesites". After years of growth and development thanks largely to railroad connections, heavy industry, farming, lumbering and other businesses beginning up around what is now downtown Niles in those early days – including local breweries like Keystone Brewery (founded 1865), First National Bank ( founded 1865), Wagon Wheel Brewing Company (established 1870), Nowhere Brewing Company (established 1876) and Gilded Age Brewery (established 1889) – following World War II induced industrial restructuring along generally north-south corridors once again characterized by large overall Employer Identification Nos., small numbers clustered around major employers rather than scattered throughout - although some smaller clusters persisted until well into recent times - much has changed since then with skyscraper developments spurring redevelopment just blocks away or even further east along Euclid Avenue or west along Ironton Road while several old brick warehouses remain vacant or used only occasionally for storage purposes; almost everything from transportation patterns through job placement rates through crime rates has seen significant revisionation over time reflecting changing opportunities available within today’s economy while many similar structures have long been abandoned or left unused outright only occasional visits are made to these former industrial strongholds still dotting centralMuskingumCounty despite claims from some quarters that they may be “aging gracefully” - if at all!

The town was incorporated in 1837 and named for General James A. Niles, who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as US Minister to Russia. The first post office in Niles was established on April 22, 1837, by order of Gov. John Richardson. The present post office building was built in 1911 and dedicated by Mayor Charles Wickersham Sr.. Niles has been home to many famous people including George Washington Carver, author Alice Paul and basketball player Julius Erving. Some notable businesses located in or near Nilles include Jardine & Co., American Weighing Company (now known as Walmart), PNC Bank headquarters, Genesee Lumber Company plant No 2 (now part of Middletown Township), Ford Motor Company plants #1-3 ( now part of the village of Northville) and #4-6 (now part of Lima).
Niles was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Niles and his wife, Hannah. The town's first store was built on the site of present-day Niles University. In 1814, Niles became a county seat of Fayette County. In 1825, the county was divided into two parts, and Niles became a part of the new Huron County. In 1854, Huron County was renamed Lake Erie County and Niles became its capital. In 1870, the city expanded eastward to include what is now the northwest side of downtown. In 1912, the city annexed portions of neighboring Warren Township. The population reached 10,000 in 1960 and peaked at 19,827 in 1970; it has since declined modestly to 9,711 (2000).
