In 1837, Niles was one of the towns in Clay County that voted to become a part of the new United States. The town had been founded by John Niles and his family in 1811. In 1830, John's grandson, Nathan Niles, married Catharine Greenough and started a grocery store in the town. The store thrived for many years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1851. Nathan Niles' widow, Sarah, reopened the store and continued to run it until her death in 1861. After Sarah's death, her son-in-law Daniel Webster decided to keep the business open as a general store instead of closing it down. The store continued to be operated by Daniel Webster and his descendants until 1978 when it closed its doors for good. The first settler in Niles was Nicholas Burden who arrived on horseback from Dublin Township on October 11th, 1800. He built a cabin on the east side of what is now High Street. Nicholas Burden later married Susannah Purdy and they set up house near present day Goodhue Road and Cuyahoga Heights Boulevard. They had four children: John (1801-1868), Mary (1802-1872), George (1803-1864) and Anna Maria (born c1800). Nicholas Burden died at home on December 12th, 1826 after a long journey from Ireland via Delaware Bayou with his team of horses and wagonloads of goods reaching Ohio just weeks before Thanksgiving Day! His wife Susannah survived him till she died at age 86 years old on March 2nd, 1893! Some thirty years later another pioneer named Elisha Denny arrived from Pennsylvania about November 15th 1830 aboard the brigantine "Erie." Denny had come west following news that land would be available for purchase along both sides of Cuyahoga River near Danville Landing junction where he thought he might find some desirable tracts of landlot or claim grants from local officials under section 8 vicissitudes law which then applied only within certain limits defined by Congressional act known as 3rd Section 5 Geo Lessee etc etc.............This area lay immediately southwestwardly extending thence northeasterly along said river to its mouth at Amish Valley creek.................Denny located here upon descending said creek.......He found good ground thereabouts...................He erected upon this site an excellent farmhouse now standing......His seventh wife Daumier came also hitherabout............Daumier resided here some time prior to her marriage.............................Her maiden name was Deacon..................She afterwards removed theretoto Xenia.........................Xenia is now Toledo !!!!!!!!!!!!!Niles played an important role throughout its history as one of Ohio’s “pioneering” towns even though not all residents wereMuskegonians like their namesake Nathaniel Muskingum! Some early pioneers such as Elisha Denny may have helped create much that exists today including beautiful architecture such as several buildings still extant today – including Nathan Niles Grocery Store - still active over 250 yrs + without any major remodeling! Niles experienced rapid growth between 1830 & 1850 due largely to increased trade between Clay County & western Michigan; numerous farmers moved into this growing community; population grew rapidly because many people desired better schools & opportunities; canal construction created more jobs acrossriver because transportation became easier; however Genset mill closure caused severe economic hardship for small town during 1840s
Niles was a small town in the west side of Ohio, United States. It is now a ghost town and the only thing left is an abandoned schoolhouse.
