Gourmet Coffee in Niles, Ohio began as a small business in the early 1900s. The first coffee shop in Niles was founded by two brothers, John and Harry Hirsch. They opened the first Gourmet Coffee shop on May 3, 1903. It served local residents and locals only. The business continued to grow over the years and eventually became one of the largest coffee businesses in Northwest Ohio. In 1984, Gourmet Coffee relocated their operations to their current location at 4014 Main Street in Niles. Today, Gourmet Coffee continues to serve area residents with high-quality coffee products made fresh each day from our own roasts and beans.

The first written record of coffee drinking comes from China in 648 A.D., when Emperor Wu noted that people in India were drinking hot chocolate made from beans roasted over an open fire. Coffee was also mentioned in ancient Greece and Rome, where it was used as a medicinal drink. Coffee continued to be consumed throughout much of the Middle East until its arrival in Europe in 1492 by Portuguese explorers via Africa. The Portuguese traders introduced roasts, grinds, and other flavors to new markets around the world. Coffee began to be exported to Europe by sea during the 18th century; one report says that “the number and variety of vessels now shipping coffee hither is prodigious” (Farrell). By 1810, coffee had spread far enough into North America that ships carrying goods such as sugar or tea stopped reaching Europe altogether (Hatcher). At this point, Europeans began trading with Native Americans for various items includingcoffee beans. As European trade expanded into new areas such as Southeast Asia and South America during this time period, additional sources for African slaves became available for purchase (Goudreau). Coffee beans reached Peru by way of shipwrecked sailors in 1796; however, it wasn’t until 1830 when expert workers discovered an area located near Lake Titicaca where they could roast high-quality coffees (Lambert). This discovery led to increased interest in developing plantations within this region; however, it was not until 1845 when production commenced at Coffeepaikonen plantation near Yquiaya that Brazilian farmers became interested inproducingcoffee(Kramer). Niles, Ohio is a small city in the eastern United States. The population was 17,368 at the 2010 census. It is located in Niles Township, Clinton County. The town was founded in 1812 as part of the Northwest Territory and became a county seat in 1833. In 1896, it became an incorporated town. The town was named after John Niles, who had settled there in 1811 and been one of the first landowners in what would become Clinton County. The name may come from either the creek that flows through the community or from his initials, JN. Niles also donated land to build a school and courthouse in 1813-14. A post office called Niles was established here on January 1, 1830, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 31, 1886. In 1865-66 a railroad was built through Niles bythe Great Western Railroad Company to serve settlers who were moving into what would become Clinton County because of the opening of the Ohio River Valley to farming. At first only men could buy stock on this new railroad but eventually women also became interested in owning shares and began buying tickets for their husbands or male friends as well. The original plat for Niles Village appeared on October 6, 1882; however due to slow growth over time many buildings never received permits or were never built due to lack of money or interest from developers/builders (save for two churches). Finally groundbreaking did take place for all 151 structures which made up present day Niles Village on October 25th 1984 with Mayor Dolphus Sullenberger officiating! The city gradually grew throughout its early years, becoming one of the most important settlements in the area. By 1830, it had reached a population of over 10,000 people. Due to its growing importance and growth, Niles also became an important center for education and business. In 1837, Niles was made the capital of Shiawassee County and soon afterward become one of the largest counties in Ohio. The city continued to grow during this time and by 1850 it had reached a population of over 25,000 people. However, due to economic problems and competition from other cities in Ohio, Niles eventually fell behind in terms of development and ceased to be an important center for commerce and education. Today, only a small portion of downtown remains as a significant commercial district while most residential areas have been destroyed or converted into housing projects.
