Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 61,821 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in Ohio and one of its six metropolitan areas. Niles is located on the north shore of Lake Erie, just west of Cleveland on State Route 827 (the "Great Lakes Highway"), and east of Akron on State Route 184 (the "Niles Road"). He erected a log cabin near present-day Union Station after traveling from Canada overland with his family. In 1814, James Fenton organized a township under English law for land grants to native Americans; this township became Niles Township in 1835. The village that grew up around Wrightstown began to be called Westville by early settlers because they could not find a town site that suited them all equally well – settlements cropped up throughout Wrightstown until about 1840 when Westville emerged as an independent village with its own post office and schoolhouse. In 1836, Wm Husted organized another township under English law for land grants to native Americans; this township became Niles Township again in 1840. In 1839–40, Augustus Kelley laid out a streetscape for what would become known as "The Village" – a grid pattern consisting of two parallel streets leading out from central square which served as homesites for farmers and their families; today's Market Street forms much of the original Kelley Streetscape boundaries . On November 1, 1850 during General Order No 2 issued following Indian Removal Act - many residents vacated their homes at or aroundwoodstock Landing due to poor soil conditions - most Native American occupants within the townships left or were forcibly relocated anywhere outside US borders before 1830 – including some who had already removed prior to orders being given .
