Niles, Ohio was the site of a large Union army deployment in 1863. The army's 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Regiment camped near what is now the Niles Mall on October 15th-16th. The brigade's artillery and mortars were brought over from Cincinnati to help support the Union ground troops.
Niles is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Defiance County. The population was 34,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Niles Township was David Cook in 1814. Cook named his new community "Niles" after General John Nance Garner who had commanded an American brigade against British forces near Portsmouth, England during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). In 1825, Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land south of present-day Niles for $2 per acre ($20 per km²). He renamed it Forrest Park and began to build a farmstead with barns, stables, and other outbuildings which he called "Strathmore." In 1830 he donated 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometer) east of today's intersection of State Route 16 and National Road 6 to the Village of Strathmore for development as a town subject to Village law; but no effort was made until 1835 to form a municipal government with a mayor and three councilmen when local citizens subscribed money for that purpose from their individual landholdings within the limits then proposed by Forrest. In 1840 Strathmore became one of six townships in Defiance County created from portions of Scioto Township; also included were Strongsville, Fairlawne Heights, Xenia, Painesville Heights/Mount Carmel/Munroe Hill and Royalton Heights/Plymouth Hillsboro on lands westward patented by Nicholas Payne et al.. The township contained only about 10%of present-day Defiance County while all but two villages within its limits were founded before 1850: Strathmore proper had 5 settlers in 1840, Fairlawne Heights 11 in 1850; Mount Carmel 12 in 1860; Plymouth Hillsboro 3 pioneers in 1870--all except Royalton Heights which arrived later that year after being granted Patent #527 from US Gov't as part of Indian removal policy affecting Native Americans living westward deeded by Shawnee nation leaders Other early residents: David Cook (1814), Nathan Bedford Forrest (1825), Elias Boudinot (1844), James Kappes (1846), John Purdy (1848), Hiram Beecher(1849), Amasa Shubert(1850).

Niles was an agricultural community located in the eastern part of Niles Township, Niles County, Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Carleton and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its fertile land, good water supply, and railroad connections. In 1870, it became a village and remained that way until 1907 when it became a city. The first settlers in Niles were Nicholas Carleton and his family who arrived in 1817 from Maryland. They built the first house on the site which still stands today. The town grew rapidly due to their fertile land and good water supply. By 1870, they had erected two log houses and four other buildings including a schoolhouse which served as the township's first courthouse. The town also developed extensive agriculture with many acres of corn, beans, soybeans, potatoes, oats and wheat being cultivated. A general store was established at this time along with several blacksmiths shops and a tannery where hides were processed into tanned leather goods. By 1907 however, the growth of Chicago had caused a sharp decline in demand for farm products so much so that Niles' population had dwindled to about 375 people from 1,500 before the turn of the 20th century During World War I (1914-18), Niles played an important role as both an airfield for American forces supporting General John J Pershing's Expeditionary Forces during World War Iand as one of five military sites chosen by President Woodrow Wilson to provide strategic airlift access overland from Great Lakes cities such as Detroit to European battlefields during World War I After America's entry into World War II (1939-45), defense needs increased significantly throughout North America which led to numerous industrial plants being established throughout Ohio including Manly/Niles/Logan Airport which replaced Army Air Base Cleveland; Cleveland Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company; National Broadcasting Company Television Tower; Mound City Paper Company plant No 2; Parma Electric Generating Station No 3; Toledo Rubber Works plant No 4 In 1951 voters approved incorporation of the city government within the boundaries of manly/nile/logan airport while retaining individual municipality status within municipal government organization statewide
Niles was founded by John Niles in 1795. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a U.S. Village on March 16, 1934.
