It has been a manufacturing center for over 100 years and is home to several large beverage companies including American Coffee Manufacturing Company (ACM), National Coffee Corporation (NBC), and Peet's Coffee & Tea. Newark was also the birthplace of espresso, which was first made in Italy in 1868. The history of coffee begins with Italian immigrants who began growing coffee beans on their farms in the area around Newark. They exported their beans to other parts of America, where they were used in everything from cigars to chapatis (flatbreads). In 1884, ACM opened its first café and started selling coffee direct to consumers. The company prospered until World War II when it went out of business due to rationing. NBC took over ACM's business during World War II and continued production until 1957. In 1965, Peet's Coffee & Tea acquired American Coffee Manufacturing Company and resumed production of espresso machines at its plant in Newark. The company continues to produce high-quality coffee today under the name Peet's New England Coffee Roasters. By 1920, New Jerseys population had reached 1 million people while they also boasted one of Americas largest railroad systems serving more than 25 states across six continents Additionally, Newark played a significant role during World War II both militarily (producing munitions) as well as economically (providing essential materials like steel).
