One of the most famous marines in Newark, Ohio is Vernon C. Walters. He was born on October 10th, 1936 and spent his early years at home before going to school at Findlay High School. Walters then went on to attend US Naval Academy where he became a midshipman in 1957. After completing his naval academy training, Walters served as an ensign with the USS John F Kennedy (CVN-66) during the Korean War while also serving as a radar operator aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65). In 1969, Walters began his career as a marine officer when he was commissioned as an ensign with the Marine Corps infantry battalion based in Quantico, Virginia. From 1976 until 1984, Walters served as Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion 2nd Marines headquartered in Quantico. In 1988, Walters assumed command of 1st Battalion 3rd Marines located at Camp Pendleton Marine Barracks in San Diego California and led them during Operation Desert Storm which resulted in their victory over Iraqi forces. Walters retired from the Marine Corps after 27 years of service on March 20th, 1991 and moved to Newark Ohio where he currently resides with his wife Karen and their two children Jason and Brooke. Vernon C. Walters has been recognized many times for his accomplishments within the Marine Corps including being awarded three unit citations along with numerous other awards including five Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for excellence within combatant commands throughout multiple tours of duty both ashore and afloat..
