The growth of Cleveland caused a rapid decline in trade and commerce in northeastern Ohio around 1830; especially with New Jersey due to its cheap labor force and lack thereof regulations regarding transportation tariffs levied against that state's manufacturers/ traders/ shipping companies Consequently, by 1830 nearly all manufacturing operations were centered around Cleveland or within 10 miles radius where transportation could be easily obtained or cheaper than from other states By 1835 only about 20% of Newark's population remained within its original city limits while most people lived outside its borders on farms or rural areas However, because much commercial activity took place along Third Street (now eastbound I-71), which ran through downtown Newark paralleling Canal Street once it left the river mouth behind; some think that more than 50% of all economic output during this time came from Downtown Newark
