Newark is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 46,572 at the 2010 census. Newark is the second-largest city in Delaware County after Columbus. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Newark were French traders in 1624, and by 1627 English traders had established posts there as part of the Great Lakes trade. In 1795 Newark became a town under survey and was organized as a village in 1814. The new town was named for Sir Edmund Hardingston, 1st Baronet (1688-1762). Newark's growth began rapidly during the 1830s when waves of immigrants arrived from Ireland and New England; by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. The construction of the Erie Canal brought large numbers of workers and their families to Newark between 1825 and 1840; this period is also known as "the great migration." By 1860 Newark had reached its peak with a population of around 2,000 people. However, Growth slowed during the Civil War due to shortages in goods caused by America's involvement in that conflict; however, it increased again following Reconstruction when factories came online and jobs grew available for men without qualifications or skills. During World War II Gentile Demolition Company made an attempt to destroy several hundred homes on Gentile Avenue within sight of City Hall because they felt that they constituted strategic ammunition dumps used by enemy forces

The violence that followed led to the displacement of many native people from their homes and forced them onto reservations throughout central Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
