The Newark, Ohio Army National Guard has been a part of the United States military since its inception in 1776. On August 8th of that year, Company H (3rd Battalion) Cleveland Infantry reporting at Camp David received orders from General McClellan to march westward on Cumberland Heights with Companies K (1st Battalion), L (2nd Battalion), M (4th Battalion) and N (5th Battalion) under their command until they had arrived at Danville Junction where they were to join up with Company I from Huntington County who would march eastward on York Road towards Chillicothe which was then proposed as their destination. Upon arrival at Danville Junction they were instructed by General McClellan not to encamp there but continue marching forward till they reached Chillicothe where they were rendezvoused with Company I from Huntington County who proceeded eastwards on York Road towards Chillicothe which was then proposed as their destination
