In 1915, the Air Service was created as part of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) to fight in France. The Air Service was disbanded after the war, but it was reactivated in 1947 when America became a republic. The first militaryair base opened in Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio in 1948 and by 1957 there were twenty-five active airfields across America. In 1950, the USAF began deployment of ballistic missiles into Europe. This new development allowed for an increased number of fighter aircraft and bombers capability which would be critical for fighting against Soviet Union’s allies such as Turkey, Iraq and Libya. By 1961, America had deployed over fifty thousand personnel and planes to European theaters of operations. Throughout its history, the USAF has made great contributions to society by helping protect our nation from enemies both abroad and within our borders. Some of these contributions include providing humanitarian assistance during disasters such as Hurricane Katrina; responding to missions such as Desert Storm; providing medical help during natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy; and leading coalition airstrikes against ISIL militants in Syria/Iraq
On Dec. 14, 1941, the United States activated its 1st Air Force and began deploying gift histories throughout the Northwest. The RAF had already been deploying gift histories in Canada for some time and the U.S.AAF was using RAF planes to deliver gifts to units in the Northwest.
