It is the smallest town in Greater Cincinnati and one of only two towns in Athens- Scioto County that have a population below 10,000. New Philadelphia's history dates back to 1811 when it was established as a trading post on the Great Miami River by General David Wilkinson. In 1815, John Fenton purchased the post from Wilkinson and made it his own. New Philadelphia became an incorporated community in 1837. The first store built there was called Fenton's Store until it burned down in 1865. In 1869, construction began on what would become the new courthouse which was completed in 1870. The new courthouse soon became known as "the Star of NewPhiladelphia." From this trade route came Indian tea plants that were then smuggled back into China through Maritime Missions (CMM) – thus starting the now familiar process of tea planting/processing at various points along the Silk Road corridor

New Philadelphia was a town in the Northwest Territory of Ohio, founded by English colonists in 1795. It was located on the Scioto River, about 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Cincinnati. The town was named for the New England city of Philadelphia. The first settler in New Philadelphia was John Morse, who arrived in 1795. Morse and his family were among the early settlers who built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. Morse became involved in local politics, serving as a justice of the peace and as mayor from 1802 to 1804. He also served as treasurer of New Philadelphia from 1805 to 1807. In 1811, he married Sarah Whitehead, daughter ofGeorge Whitehead. In 1815, Morse donated land to become what is now First Baptist Church downtown. The church building opened in 1830. Morse died in 1840 at age 80 years old. His wife survived him until her death in 1865; she is buried at First Baptist Church downtown.
