New Philadelphia is located in the northern part of Ohio, about 40 miles due west of Cincinnati. It was founded by planters in 1812 who named it for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, becoming one of the most important transportation and commercial centers in eastern Ohio. New Philadelphia was incorporated as a township in 1847, and became a city in 1875. The city has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Northwest Ohio and has played an important role in the growth of Cincinnati. New Philadelphia’s rich history begins with its founders. John Denton and his brother James founded the settlement on November 3, 1812, after purchasing 160 acres (66 hectares) from Peter Sellersbach cattle ranch near what is now Greenville, West Virginia. The original name for the town was Fayette Township, but because John Denton had been born into a wealthy family there were suggestions that he change his name to New Philadelphia so that people would know him as a new American pioneer instead of just an owner of land. Denton agreed and changed his name to NewPhiladelphia on January 5, 1813. The first buildings were built at this location – a small schoolhouse and meeting house called “The People’s House” which served as their home until 1815; two stores called “The Storehouse”; and a large workshop or barn known as “The Big House” which housed both the traders’ shops and local blacksmithing operations until around 1850 when these businesses moved to larger quarters within downtown Cincinnati). During the 1830s, business activity increased significantly thanks to new transportation methods such as canals dug through thick hillsides between two valleys close to where New Philadelphia now stands. This improved access to markets throughout much of Eastern Ohio while also creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs like John Denton who developed mills hereabouts that produced clothiers clothes hats shoes boots axles wagons teams etc., along with other goods needed for daily life including flour salt pork butter knives etc., all at low prices for rural residents who could not afford even rudimentary equipment back then! New Philadelphia was founded in 1788 by Benjamin Franklin, as the capital of what would become the Northwest Territory. The town was named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and quickly became a center of trade and commerce. In 1802, New Philadelphia became the capital of the United States after Washington's inauguration. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years. By 1800, it had a population of over 10,000 people and functioned as an important commercial center. However, economic development stagnated in New Philadelphia during the 1830s and 1840s because of difficult political conditions in the region. In 1851, after several years of lobbying by local investors and politicians, NewPhiladelphia became the capital of Ohio following a referendum vote by its citizens. The city's growing economy soon resumed its previous trajectory; however, prosperity did not last long due to difficulties with transportation and land management. In 1865, NewPhiladelphia lost its status as the capital when Toledo took that role instead. However, despite these challenges NewPhiladelphia has continued to be one of America's most influential cities ever since it attained national prominence in 1861 thanks to its strategic location within reach of both Cincinnati and Detroit (the two largest American cities at that time). Today, NewPhiladelphia remains a vibrant cultural center with strong ties to its surrounding communities – from manufacturing jobs in downtown to higher- education opportunities around University Circle – providing impetus for revitalization efforts across much of its core area each year.
