It was founded on July 6, 1800 by General David Wilkinson and other Native Americans as a trading post called Fort Delaware on the Scioto River. The city grew rapidly due to its location nearWabash Railroad tracks and its access to new transportation outlets. The first commercial establishment in New Philadelphia was a gristmill built in 1821 by Nicholas Muller and Isaac Beaumont. In 1825, Wilkinson donated land to build a public square in downtown New Philadelphia. The square became known as "The Square" and served as an important civic center until it burned down in 1827. In 1830, Wilkinson donated another parcel of land to create what is now First National Bank Park located at the intersection of Second Street and Main Avenue NW.). After becoming an incorporated town on February 14, 1837, New Philadelphia adopted a government under which it functioned as a single-member township with three commissioners elected at-large from districts within the township limits. On March 2nd.,1839 when Franklin County was created from portions of Cincinnati County (including what is now Upper Arlington), NewPhiladelphia became part of Franklin County along with Parma Township (now Arlington Heights). On October 7th., 1861 during American Civil War Battle Of Gettysburg Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant defeated Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell at battle field northeast of downtown NewPhiladelphia; this event is sometimes cited as markingthe end of Reconstruction Era in America (). On November 3rd.,1861 Franklin County granted voting rights to African Americans who were living illegally within its boundaries (). During World War II many munitions plants were constructed in or around downtown NewPhiladelphia including Lovett & Laughlin Steel Company (), United States Steel Corporation (), Bethlehem Steel Corporation (), Lorraine Tool Works (), Nucor Corporation () and more; these plants produced thousands of jobs for local residents (). After World War II most manufacturing operations moved out of or away from downtownNewPhiladelphia while some continued thanks to nearby Hamilton Furniture Factory (). In 1984 furniture manufacturer Sears closed its store inside First NationalBank Park after 31 years (); this event led to increased traffic congestion on Second Street NW.) The steel industry declined beginning around 1990 while smaller businesses have replaced it; however there has been recent development such as startup accelerator incubator Olde Foundry Incorporated that plans to revive old foundries throughout central Ohio Today's economy relies largely upon services such as health care and education although there are some manufacturing efforts such as Conagra Foods Incorporated that makes frozen food products

On October 16th, 1815, Ohio Governor George Prentice approved issuance of a charter for NewPhiladelphia by Chief Justice Moses Brownlow underwritten by Andrew Mellon and Isaac Watts with 100 shares each The city grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military bases around Youngstown (now Cleveland) and because production plants operated by General Motors (now Chevrolet) were located there including GM’s Cuyahoga Valley Plant where cars were made from 1936 until 1957 In 1961, Mayor Robert Fenton ordered demolition of most old buildings located within 500 feet (150 m) radiusof City Hall in order to create an open space that would be used for public uses such as recreation, sports and concerts In 1984, new comprehensive zoning regulations were put into place which banned many types of housing development within rangeof Muni stops including New Philadelphia's two stop light intersections which created traffic nightmare
