New Philadelphia, Ohio was a town in central Ohio and the county seat of Delaware County from 1814 to 1821. It was founded by Nicholas Warner and others in 1814 as a new village on the Scioto River near its present location. In 1816, Delaware County were divided into two districts – one including New Philadelphia and the other including Athens – and the village became part of the Athens district. NewPhiladelphia experienced significant growth during its early years; by 1840, it included a storehouse and six blacksmiths. However, because of its remote location and lack of transportation options, it struggled to become an important center for trade or commerce throughout its early years. Despite this reality however, many residents built homespun businesses in their small community that continued to thrive even after transportation improvements arrived at some point later in the century. By 1870-71 however, merchants had realized that they needed more space so they began moving out of NewPhiladelphia and into larger settlements such as Dayton and Springfield where they could better serve their customers on a far-reaching basis. The Erie Canal arrived in1825 which led to increased trade between NewPhiladelphia and Erie City; by 1830 Wilmington (now Cuyahoga Falls) also incorporated as part of Cleveland having become increasingly important due to its location on Lake Erie at what is now northeast corner of University Circle just east off I-480 across from Quicken Loans Arena
