New Philadelphia is a small town in the US state of Ohio. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Dayton. The population was 1,059 at the 2010 census. In 1817, William Ladd, a settler from Pennsylvania and son of John Ladd, founded New Philadelphia on land he had purchased from the Chickasaw Nation. The town was named for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which was then part of Delaware County. The first post office in New Philadelphia opened in 1821 and remained open until1827. The original bank building still stands today and is also used as a library. The community developed around two churches: First Congregational and Second Presbyterian. early businesses included a store, an Agricultural Society meeting house, a blacksmith shop and two cotton ginners. In 1831-32 construction began on what would become the first public school in Ohio; this structure served as the town's central square until it burned down in 1865 due to weather conditions that contributed to crop failures throughout much of Ohio during that year. In 1830 Eliza Taylor married Uriah Sibley who came from New London Connecticut with his family when he became a naturalized US Citizen in 1828; they lived at 36 South Main Street until their death in 1912 when their home passed through ownership several times before it was donated to New Philadelphia Historical Society in 1924 (). Mrs Sibley left behind her extensive collection including over 150 items collected by her husband between 1830-1890 while living at 36 South Main Street (). Her contribution to American history is significant as many important documents originating from Delaware County were created or compiled by her husband while living there ().
