In 1848, Nicholas-Jacques Conte began importing beans from Ethiopia that he roasted himself at his home outside of Pisa. In 1984, Tim Hortons opened up shop in the town and began offering fresh roasted coffee to customers on a daily basis. New Philadelphia is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Philadelphia is located on the southern border of Cleveland and is bordered by Eastlake to the north and Westlake to the east. The city of Cleveland lies to the south-east and Noble Township (home to Mount Carmel) borders Akron to the east. The first permanent European settlers in what would become New Philadelphia were refugees from a series of smallpox epidemics that struck western Ohio in 1795-96. They arrived at what is now called "New Jerusalem" on High Street just north of present day downtown Cleveland; it was then one of three original townships within cleveland's current boundaries. In 1814, when Cleveland became an incorporated village, most residents chose to move there rather than continue living near where they had come from during those early days before disease caused many departures from their homes along with new arrivals who also wanted a better life than what existed back home (the Erie Canal had just been opened). However, some people did stay – primarily around Spring Lake – until 1821 when they all moved into quarters erected by nearby residents on land donated by Colonel John Sevier for this purpose near today's Park Road and Euclid Avenue NW which still bears his name today as well as others including Chesterfield Heights and Avondale Hills.
