New Philadelphia is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Akron-Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Philadelphia was founded in 1811 by Isaac Brock and his brother Ezekiel as a new village on the Scioto River east of Akron. The name "New Philadelphia" was chosen because of its location near what later became Columbus, Ohio, and because of the promise that this new settlement would make to settle the area between the rivers and provide an agricultural backbone for western Ohio. By 1823, New Philadelphia had grown enough to become its own incorporated town, with a government under a board of directors made up of citizens from various parts of town. In 1825, NewPhiladelphia joined with other towns in Summit County to form the new Municipal District No. 2 which included most of northwestern Ohio including Akron and Canton (now part of Dayton). In 1830, after much debate among residents over whether or not to secede from Municipal District No. 2 due to differences in taxation rates and governance style, NewPhiladelphia voted by acclamation to join as an independent city within Municipal District No. 1 The nucleus for what would become today's downtown Cleveland began developing here around 1830; when landowner John Armitage donated 160 acres (63 hectares) northwest of Main Street for commercial development he named it Eden Park after his home country Eden – then still one corner away from England – where he had been born in 1784 while serving as captain in General James Wolfe's army during the American Revolution suppression campaign against British forces at Saratoga Springs, NY In 1833–34 local builder James Hennepin erected prototypes for a gristmill on high ground just north/west of present-day State Route 66 called Ginn Mill which replaced an earlier mill built by pioneer Nicholas Merrill around 1800 which failed due to rusting equipment problems Heanepin's mill became operational in early 1840 but closed due to economic difficulties caused largely by excessively wet years followed by hard freezes that destroyed trees so severe that many sawmills were abandoned throughout Northeast Ohio In 1847 Samuel Hubbard opened his first grocery store located on High Street just south/west off Amherst Road known now as Hubbard's Market Place Hubbard continued operations until 1893 when he sold out and moved into his former building on Superior Avenue now known as The Hub Museum . Hubbard remained proprietor until his death in 1907 . Hudson’s father also ran a grocery store adjacent thereto from about 1800 until about 1850 . When Samuel Hubbard died son Hudson inherited all assets including inventory items dating back more than 150 years old stored at The Hub Museum plus some additional hardware stores situated primarily along current US Route 422 also known locally as Hubbardtown Road
