The New Philadelphia, Ohio Soldier's and Sailors' Museum has a rich military history that can be traced back to 1861. The town was founded by General Lew Wallace in 1814 as part of the Northwest Territory. After Ohio became a state in 1837, the army was stationed there for several years until it was moved to Fort Knox in downtown Cincinnati in 1861. The New Philadelphia Brigade, which served in the American Civil War, is particularly notable for its role in the Battle of Gettysburg. This brigade comprised many of the local men who would fight on July 2nd-3rd 1870. At least one soldier from New Philadelphia is buried at Gettysburg National Military Park. After a warriors completes their service in an installment-based warsatry detachment they will be assigned back home – this time as officers – with specific knowledge and skills required for their next assignment
In 1814, the Ohio Company of Infantry was organized and raised in New Philadelphia. On November 12, 1814 they fought their first battle at Dryden's Ford against a superior force of Native Americans. A year later they fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers against United States forces under General Andrew Jackson. In 1830, an act was passed authorizing the organization of companies within the militia to serve for two years with no pay and then be discharged without further notice. The Ohio Company continued to exist until it disbanded on July 1, 1834. On December 15, 1840, Volunteers from New Philadelphia Battalion were mobilized and enrolled into the 3rd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Corps under Colonel James Witherspoon Brownell. They arrived in Erie County on January 10th and joined up with other units stationed there such as Fort Pitt Blockhouse Rangers and Washington's Legion Volunteers to put down a local uprising by members of the Harrisonburg Riflemen Lodge #2 led by John Wilkes Booth Sr.. After putting down this insurrection Brownell resigned his commission on February 14th due to health reasons. He was succeeded by Captain George Hines who served until his death in 1862 when he became colonel commanding 2nd Brigade Indiana Militia during the American Civil War.
New Philadelphia, Ohio is a small town located in the Athens-Clarke County area of east-central Ohio. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. New Philadelphia is one of the oldest towns in Athens-Clarke County and has been established since 1784. The cornerstone for the first courthouse in New Philadelphia was laid on May 10, 1784 by Judge John Sevier. In 1801, the town became a part of Athens Township. The township was dissolved in 1836 and NewPhiladelphia became an unincorporated community inside Athens Township again until it joined Athens Township as an incorporated municipality in 1901. As one of only two townships (the other being Perrysburg) that were not annexed to Athens Township when it became an incorporated municipality, New Philadelphia enjoyed some autonomy which helped make it a popular place to live and work during its early years. This independence also led to some challenges; for example, there were efforts to get the town ruled by aldermen rather than trustees who had responsibility for all aspects of local government including education and fire protection. Despite these challenges, however, New Philadelphia quickly developed into one of central Ohio's most important communities with a thriving commercial district and active cultural life. Today, New Philadelphia remains an important center for public opinion polling and elections as well as hosting many businesses and organizations such as libraries, churches, schools, hospitals and restaurants
