The USAF presence in New Philadelphia, Ohio dates back to World War II. The city was home to the Wright brothers’ aviation center and an Air Force station served as a bomber base during the war. In 1946, the first Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet was stationed in New Philadelphia. In 1979, the United States military withdrew from New Philadelphia and its associated area following the end of the Cold War. However, due to its strategic location and proximity to Dayton, Ohio, the city continued to be a major support hub for NATO operations until 2001. The last USAAF unit stationed in New Philadelphia was activated in 2006 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Today, New Philadelphia is home to several civilian organizations that serve as a vital link between local government and members of the USAF community. These organizations include the Air National Guard Base Command Post (ANGPCP), which houses air traffic control facilities; AFISN-NewPhiladelphia Airport Authority; and Chamber of Commerce/NewPhiladelphia Economic Development Corporation

The town became an important manufacturing center during the early 1800s, thanks to its location on the river and its access to raw materials from nearby mines. The town also developed a strong trade with other parts of Ohio and Kentucky. In 1814, New Philadelphia was incorporated as a city under the name ofPhiladelphia. The city experienced rapid growth in the 1840s, due to its importance as a transportation hub for goods moving through Ohio and Kentucky. In 1851, Philadelphia merged with neighboring townships to form what is now known as Union Township (renamed West Union Township in 1912). During the late 19th century, New Philadelphia experienced some significant social changes that have been remarked upon elsewhere in Ohio. For instance, many white men left the town for better opportunities elsewhere during this time period; however, black residents continued to live and work here until well into the 20th century. Additionally, NewPhiladelphia experienced several attacks by bandits during this time period which had a significant impact on local security measures.
