In 1829, New Franklin was founded as a town in the Northwest Territory of Ohio. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1836, the town was renamed New Franklin and it became a city in 1907. In 1970, New Franklin merged with the adjacent city of Dayton to form a consolidated city government.
New Franklin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 23,862. The name New Franklin is derived from the fact that it was founded by General George Washington and his army during their march through central Ohio in 1799 as part of their drive to connect with Cincinnati. At first known as Frenchtown after its initial settlers, it became New Franklin in 1802 when Congress changed the name of the surrounding counties from Chester to New Franklin in order to better reflect its location on an eventual route between Cincinnati and Philadelphia. The settlement at Frenchtown was initially but briefly a trading post before becoming an agricultural community led by pioneer farmers such as John Deere and Nicholas Perot who began cultivating land around 1800. Over time, other pioneers arrived including Germans immigrants who began farming here in 1810 and Scots-Irish Catholics who arrived beginning around 1815; these groups helped form what would become known as "the Irish American community." By 1830, New Franklin had reached its peak with over 60 families settled there; however, during this time period economic conditions begin to decline due primarily to increased travel times for goods necessary for manufacturing or trade outside of Manchester (now Pittsburgh) which then lay just across the river in Pennsylvania. After several failed attempts by investors to revive operations at the post office andinery complex built by previous owners near present day Union Station, mail service within New Columbus dried up completely on November 15th 1837 after traveling less than one mile from Dutch Hillpost south along what is now US Route 422 until it met up with service outposts at Xenia (now Aurora), Perrysburg (now Kenton), Lebanon (now Lima), Portsmouth (now Portsmouth) and Wilmington (now Delaware). This sudden closure left residents without access to important communications tools they relied upon for both business and social interaction during what would be one of America's most significant periods of technological development; prior to this momentous event only sporadic phone conversations could be heard over local transmissions available only sporadically throughout rural areas such as mine towns like Utica and Ironton north of Cleveland or downriver at Fort Wayne where packet Telegraph lines were being established between Great Britain and North America As commerce gradually regained some footing following Morse's telegraph installation along with improved transportation methods via railroadroads within years thereafter various businesses reopened including shoe stores founded by Elijah McCoy followed by banks starting up around 1840; however, new plans soon emerged targeting industrialization instead which resulted in 2ndhand mercantile businesses moving into town while large factories were built adjacent such as Canning Works erected next door to Phillips Brewery producing beers for local consumption while also raising production levels for whiskey produced nearby at Malvern Furnace making it one of America's largest distilleries Although lumbering remained an important industry until Demand dwindled shortly after World War II due largelyBeginning around 1850 auto manufacture took hold with numerous carriages/trucks being produced here beginning appearing on marketplaces across eastern USA In addition numerous small retailers selling items related predominantlyto foodstuffs such as groceries etc started opening throughout downtown area spawning a number more nightlife venues today than when originally conceived Finally prominent architecturally notable structures constructed during this time include First Presbyterian Church completed circa 1850 atop Queen Street while Gothic Revival styled Methodist Episcopal Church was erected opposite later becoming home to Chautauqua Institution giving rise eventually too latter day cultural attractions centeredaround modern art galleries located closeby
