It has been said that the first coffee beans were roasted in New Franklin, Ohio in 1795. The beans were grown by farmers and ranchers who used their own methods to roast and grind the coffee. Coffee was not exported until after the American Revolution. In 1814, a group of Dutch immigrants started a small coffee plantation in what is now New Franklin. They were able to start exports of coffee because they had access to good soil, rain water, and skilled workers. The Dutch continue to grow and export coffee until 1922 when production was discontinued due to World War I hostilities. In 1895, Edwin Ladd began marketing his dark roast coffee as “New Franklin Coffee”. He moved from his original location on State Street in Dayton to this business location which he called “The Old Mill”. At this time, Edwin Ladd became one of the most well-known and experienced coffeespeakers in the United States. He continued making high quality coffees for many years until his death in 1926. After Mr. Ladd's death, his sons continued marketing and selling their father's excellent products under the name "Edwin Ladd Roasters". In 1938, Center City Coffee Corporation purchased "The Old Mill" from Edwin Ladd's heirs and renamed it “New Franklin Coffee Company” It served as the corporate headquarters for Center City Coffee Corporation until its dissolution in 1969 when all assets were sold off to various private investors including Brown & Williamson Tobacco Co., Incorporated (B&W). Today there are several small independent roasteries still manufacturing elite high quality cup of Joe's throughout much of central Ohio including New Franklin where many of America's earliest pioneers conducted their operations over 150 years ago!

New Franklin, Ohio was founded in 1798 by the General Court of Ohio as a town to be named after Major General George Washington. The first settler in New Franklin was John Hennessey and his family, who arrived in 1798. After a few years, other pioneers followed and the population of New Franklin grew rapidly. In 1800, Congress created the township of New Franklin from parts of Green Township and Clearfield Township, also in Ohio. In 1801-02, Captain James Kapp built a log cabin on what is now State Route 422 north of present-day New Franklin. This early settler is generally considered to be the first white person to live in what is now known as the city of Cleveland. In 1803-04, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brock built a group of ten log cabins at what is now State Route 21 near downtown Cleveland. These early settlers were among the earliest American citizens located within reach ofCLEVELAND NOW! The area around where Cleveland now stands was originally swampy and uninhabitable. However, with concerted effort by landowning families over many years, development began on what would become one of America’s most important cities – Cleveland – beginning with this initial land purchaserecorded on July 12th 1824 by Judge James Ransom (later Justice Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court judge). One significant event that took place during this time period was when members of both houses of Congress passed an act authorizing construction along Lake Erie for an increase in trade between the United States and Great Britain; this Act became known as “The Liverpool Act” because it originated from British Prime Minister Sir John Liverpool’s visit to Cleveland in 1814. The original site for City Hall (now Quicken Loans Arena), which would later become home to the Cavaliers basketball team, had been chosen for its strategic location overlooking Lake Erie: just east of current day I-271/State Route 422 and about two miles due southwest from modern day FirstEnergy Stadium on Euclid Avenue - another key piece in Cleveland’s history! This Act also authorized creation within City limits of five separate wards or districts; these wards would eventually form much like our current city government today! It should be noted that not all approvals were granted until well into the future since much work still needed to be done on developing this new community including library building (the cornerstone being laid November 10th 1830), water works (completed January 7th 1831) and streetlights (installed February 2nd 1830!). Indeed some areas still await completion such as Central Park which opened its doors August 15th 1850!
