The first known attempt to roast coffee was made by purchasing beans from an Italian farmer up the street in 1876. The beans were ground and roasted on a stove in the home of Mr. Smith. In 1886, two Dutchmen who also resided in New Franklin started a small roasting business at 5th and Main Streets. The first bag of coffee sold for $1 per pound. In 1932, Milton Hershey began importing large quantities of Arabica beans from Colombia. This led to the first commercially successful roasting operation in New Franklin when Hershey hired George Roemer to operate his new roastery on First Street near Market Square. From this point on, fresh roasted coffee became an important part of the town’s identity and economy. Today, there are several roasters located in or around New Franklin that offer high-quality cup of Joe products consistent with its long history as a center for espresso culture and commerce. New Franklin, Ohio is the birthplace of coffee. It was first roasted in 1796 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother Giovanni. The town's first store, founded in 1802, sold coffee beans direct to customers. The townspeople quickly became interested in the product and started roasting their own bean on site. In 1827, New Franklin established a cooperative with other small towns in central Ohio to sell coffee directly to consumers. In 1825, it became a village; in 1830, it became a town; and in 1840, it became an incorporated municipality. The current name first appeared on state lists of towns in 1849 when New Franklin constituted an electoral district within Warren County; however, this name did not appear until 1860 when New FranklinVote added to its list of political subdivisions within that county The city lies just south-southwest of downtown Columbus and straddles both banks of the Scioto River as well as Interstate 71 which forms its eastern border In 1990, Forbes magazine placed New Franklin second on their list "The Best Places To Live In America" behind only Austin Texas New Franklin has been host to numerous State fairs such as The Illinois State Fair from 1915-1997 and again from 2006-2009 while also hosting numerous other events including The Great American Beer Festival twice (2007 & 2009)

New Franklin, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 576 at the 2010 census. New Franklin was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Wright and his family as a trading post on the Great Miami River. It became a town in 1837, and again in 1840 when it became a part of the Washington County seat. In 1849, New Franklin merged with neighboring towns of West Union to form the new village of Franklin. In 1907, New Franklin seceded from Washington County and formed its own government with a mayor and one-member council. The city of Columbus annexed New Franklin in 1920, but kept its name until it changed to Columbus Township in 1978. New Franklin has several distinct landmark districts which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Wright House District (1814-1827), Presbyterian Church (1837-1911), Methodist Episcopal Church (1849-1907), City Hall (1920-1978), Josephine Wright Schoolhouse (1901-2000), West Union Block House (1796) and Anthony Wayne House (c 1795). also located nearby are three cemeteries: Oakwood Cemetery(site of 1796 Anthony Wayne House/West Union Block House; Potter Cemetery(site of 1692 Nicholas Wright's Trading Post/Wright House; Goodson Cemetery(site of 1800 John Ford)
New Franklin was founded in 1810 by John C. Frick and his wife, Rachel. It is the oldest town in the county of Stark and is located southeast of Cleveland on the Scioto River. The original settlers were farmers who had migrated from Pennsylvania. In 1816, New Franklin became part of the newly created County of Medina and was named for General James Wilkinson, a leader in the American Revolutionary War. The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1820. New Franklin experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its location and commerce interests within Harrisonburg County as well as its access to transportation via riverboats and railroads. During this time, the town boasted a large number of housing developments including Regency House (now part of University Circle), Masonic Lodge No. 2 (now Olde Towne SEIU Building), Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church), Upper Level School (Now Stonington Elementary School) and Post Office/Grocery Store (Now IHOP).
