New Franklin, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located in the southern part of the county of Hamilton and lies on the banks of the Little Miami River. New Franklin was founded on July 4, 1788 by James Monaghan and his family as a trading post near what is now Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The first store was built there by James Monaghan's father-in-law, John Lawlor. New Franklin grew slowly until 1814 when Colonel David Baird purchased land east of town from James Monaghan for $5 per acre ($ 100 at current prices). In 1815, New Franklin became a village and later an incorporated town under the name "Franklin." The population growth resulted from business activities such as farming, transportation, trade and manufacturing. In 1824, New Franklin petitioned to become part of the then newly created United States federal district included within present-day Greene County. On November 3 that year, President 24th Ulysses S. Grant issued an Executive Order granting this request and ordering all towns within Greene County to join into District 8 which would include Columbus, Cincinnati and Cincinnati Township (later Elkhart Township). This order created much controversy because some residents saw it as discrimination against their smaller community; however most inhabitants followed through with joining District 8 without any further protest or objection from New Franklin
New Franklin was founded in 1795 by Captain John C. Green and his wife, who named it for George Washington. At first, the town was a small farming community located on the Scioto River. In 1806, New Franklin became the capital of Ohio Territory and eventually became the state of Ohio in 1813.
